The Clones Surpass the $300M Mark
    Wednesday, August 28, 2002 2:01 CDT

According to The Hollywood Reporter, George Lucas' Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones surpassed the $300 million mark at the domestic box office Tuesday, its 104th day in release.

The 20th Century Fox prequel is now the 13th highest-grossing film in domestic history, just behind the studio's Independence Day, which garnered $306.2 million in 1996.

"Clones" is the second film released this year to top the $300 million mark; Sony's Spider-Man is the other, with $403.7 million in domestic box office. I was wondering why ol' VV has been keeping a low profile around here lately!

It was all about proper marketing. George should have advertised the fact that this was a Jar-Jar "light" movie..... I honestly believe Jar-Jar hurt AOC's chances of making more money......I had at least 4 or 5 friends say they weren't going to see it cause of him. As soon as I let them know that Jar head had about 5 minutes of total screen time.....they went to see it!

.......I have to give Spiderman his props.....Sam Rami nailed that film and deserves it!

George needs to beef up the dialogue for Episode 3 and give us more bad ass dudes (& chicks) kicking ass to John Williams' "Imperial March" themes.......now get to work George!
From 3-13 to 10-6 and NFC South Champs.....go Saints!

Dennis made a very good point there. I knew of a lot of people who were gonna skip AOTC, because they were so annoyed with Jar Jar in the previous film. That really sucks balls, because Star Wars AOTC deserved to be the biggest selling movie of the year (IMO).....

Ah well, props to Spiderman I guess.....BUT I will say this: When Spiderman Part 5 does as well as Star Wars Attack Of The Clones did this year, I will be more impressed!!!

Ya still gotta admit, for the FIFTH movie in a franchise that has been around since 1977, AOTC did some pretty decent business all the same!!!!

When you get right down to it, who cares about box office figures except the movie studios? I think anybody would give their right nut to have their movie rank #8 or #9 on the all-time list. So they're both "winners".

AOTC still beats Spider-Man IMO. Better story, better action, and MUCH better effects. Spidey was good, but AOTC was a solid film that could actually be compared to the original trilogy (unlike TPM).

But there were a couple of other movies that topped AOTC and Spider-Man: Signs and Minority Report.

    "Clones" was fair...
SpiderMan was superior moviemaking in every way...

IMO, we could have skipped Menace altogether...what a waste of time...There is NOTHING in that movie that is indispensable to the SW story...Lucas' one good idea in that flick, Darth Maul, was TOTALLY wasted with all that "medichlorian virgin birth" crap...Pod race? waste of time...everyone knows ILM is the best, at least it was until Matrix got made...Lucas was using Menace to market ILM it seemed to me...

Let me know when a FIFTH Spider-Man movie will make 300 million at the box office.

    Then we'll talk.

Yeh, Spiderdick out did Attack... at the box office, but I'd take Attack any day. Spiderman was ok, and Kirsten Dunst is hot, but Attack had better effects (spidy's swinging looked totally fake), a more interresting story, and Natalie Portman.

I think the reason Spiderman topped Attack is that it was the first in the series, and was anticipated for a long time (so was Attack, but Menace had fed the appitite for Star Wars only three years earlier, while this is the first Spidy movie ever). Attack was hurt by Menace. If Attack had been the fist Star Wars movie in 22 years, it would have made far more than Menace did (and Menace, if it came after Attack would have made less than Attack did). Granted, Attack isn't perfect. There are no fun, obnoxious characters like Han Solo. The dialog is stiff (although that's because all the characters are Jedi or important public figures, and need to act that way).

Jar Jar wasn't THAT bad. He may have been a little annoying at times, but he shouldn't have been the scapegoat for the movie's critics. And he certainly wasn't a "racist stereotype" as some morons have called him...
