Down here in Australia we're in drought. A pretty severe one even by our own dry standards - this is the driest continent on earth, about 75% of the land mass is desert. Worst drought in 102 years by some records.

And today in Sydney city, its gonna hit 35 in the city (95F) - and thats by the coast Out here in the Western Suburbs where I live, its forcast to hit 41 (105F)

It's not even summer here yet. Wait till Janruary/February when it REALLY gets hot!

I feel your pain. A couple of years ago in Dallas it was triple digits farenheit for like 3 monmths with no rain. Lakes dropped so low that some docks ended up ashore, and the water tables were nearly empty... Pretty creepy stuff.

That's just a "dry" heat, though. Try those same temperatures with a relative humidity of 70-90%, and that's what the central and southern U.S. deals with on a yearly basis (especially Missouri [aka Misery] ).

We'd kill for a little humidity Scott.

That dry heat, added to a drought, added to our eucalyptus forests = BUSHFIRES (Eucalypt trees, by natural design give off a mildly flammable gas when its dry and hot, and tend to explode under fire conditions)

I'll take your humidity over the smoke haze we've had here for most of the past couple of months

Yeh. thats another thing LOL. That was Griffith in South Central New South Wales a couple weeks ago.

Big dust storm rolled right over the top of Sydney last month - it was blown off the outback and was at a pretty high altitude. The sky went pink!! Another dust cloud last weeks came by as we got just the slightest little bit of drizzly showers, and it rained mud!!!

Tornados are not a problem here really. Get the odd freak one but thats it. Do get bad cyclones in the tropics though.

Most of the populations on the east coast and SW coast. Most of the middles desert/outback

You know, Goo, it's hard for me to feel sorry for someone complaining about heat and drought when it's 0 C (32 F) and they're talking about up to 3 inches of snow right in time for the afternoon commute home.

Tell you what, I'll swap you three inches of precipitation for 40 degrees F. Deal?

Goo, up on the Blue Mountains where I'm, we get humidity that just totally wrecks you.
End up lying in front of a fan with only two brain cells still working!
When you say you're from the western subs, do you mean Parramata west or as far out as Penrith west?
I had a friend working around there who was overcome by the heat the other day. Ended up having to be picked up and returned to the safety of the BMs!
You guys cop it pretty bad down there!

Especially with Australian Rules Football, A.K.A 'Aerial ping pong!!!

Fact is the West supplies almost half the gdp of Australia through its rich mining industry, not to mention tourism. The part I come from, the South West corner of Oz is some of the most beautiful and unspoilt country in the world.....

The middle of West Oz and the Nortern Territory is desert for thousands of square kilometres, as your Robert Bogucki discovered. Very lucky to be alive that man......

I'm actually from Tassie origonally. While it doesnt get to 40 in Tassie very often, it feels a lot the same when it's 32-33 down there. It's actually probably MORE comfortable here at 40 than it is down there in the low 30's. Humidity again I guess.

I live in Blacktown now mate. Half way between the 2 you mentioned
