Universal & Mann Bring Back Miami Vice
    Thursday, May 9, 2002 1:37 CDT

Universal Pictures and Michael Mann ("The Insider," "Heat," "Ali") will bring the '80s cop series "Miami Vice" to the big screen. Variety reports that the film will be creatively steered by the man who gave the series a look and style that made it a cultural touchstone of the decade. Mann, who exec produced the series, will write the film script and produce with Forward Pass partner Sandy Climan. Series creator Anthony Yerkovich will exec produce. Once the script is complete he will decide whether to direct or not.

Mann is currently eyeing several contenders for his next directing gig including an Eric Roth-scripted Western, a sci-fi project, an espionage thriller and a David Self-scripted adaptation of the Spartan epic "Gates of Fire."

For the adaptation of the show, Mann will look to create a contemporary crime detective story set in Miami. The series revolved around detectives Sonny Crockett (Don Johnson) and Ricardo Tubbs (Philip Michael Thomas). Will they have cameos? Only time will tell...

    Ozzy set for AUSTIN POWERS
Myers looks to hard rocker to spice GOLDMEMBER

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    Dateline: Thursday, May 9, 2002

    By: CHRISTOPHER ALLAN SMITH
    By: News Editor
    Source: Variety

Trying to ride the leading edge of the pop culture zeitgeist, Mike Myers and director Jay Roach have nabbed Ozzy Osbourne and family for a cameo in AUSTIN POWERS IN GOLDMEMBER.

Roach and Myers snagged the family made popular by MTV’s THE OSBOURNES. According to VARIETY, Myers will not appear with the family, who had their scenes filmed at their home seen every week on the ‘sitcom reality’ show.

If this sounds like a weird, late in the game addition, Roach and Myers did the same thing in 1999 at the height of JERRY SPRINGER’s popularity.

    POWERS comes out July 26.

NEWS - Homer Simpson To Tackle Chumbawamba's 'Tubthumping'
    05/09/2002

(5/9/02, 7 a.m. ET) -- Simpsons character Homer Simpson will offer his interpretation of the Chumbawamba hit, "Tubthumping," on the next episode of the popular animated sitcom, airing Sunday (May 12) on the Fox network.

The character, played by Dan Castellaneta, will offer his own variation of the 1997 top 10 single, with the words: "I take a whiskey drink/I take a chocolate drink/and when I have to pee/I use the kitchen sink."

For Chumbawamba, the choice to grant permission comes after it has turned down numerous requests for use of the song, including those from South African rugby teams, a Norwegian organization that reenacts Viking battles, and an Irish recording artist who dresses in a turkey outfit, according to a band spokesperson. But the British group shares an affinity for Homer, saying that the song "could have been written precisely for [him]."

"We relate 'cause most people in the band are parents; we relate 'cause we've been there, blasted and peeing in the sink, or the wardrobe or the hallway fully believing it to be the toilet," says Chumbawamba's Danbert Nobacon. Maybe being able to laugh at ourselves--and take the proverbial piss out of ourselves--is part of what keeps Chumbawamba going."

Chumbawamba's next album, Readymades, arrives June 18 from Republic/Universal.

NEWS - Saliva's Josey Scott On 'Hero' And Spider-Man
    05/09/2002

(5/9/02, 10 a.m. ET) -- One of rock's current hottest songs, "Hero," appears on the soundtrack to one of the hottest movies around, Spider-Man. The soundtrack, which debuted at Number Four on the Billboard 200, includes the hit featuring Nickelback's Chad Kroeger, Pearl Jam drummer Matt Cameron, and Saliva frontman Josey Scott. It's currently moving up the Billboard Modern Rock chart.

"Hero" was also going to feature former Alice In Chains guitarist Jerry Cantrell, but when the all-star project entered the studio, Cantrell had to go to the funeral of his friend, drummer Randy Castillo.

Scott told LAUNCH about the video clip for the song. "We recorded the song and had to record the video back to back because we all had full schedules so we jumped in this airplane hangar," he said. "Nigel Dick built this rooftop inside an airplane hangar with a green screen and everything it was really cool and we filmed the video. Matt Cameron had to go home as well so we used the drummer for Our Lady Peace (Jeremy Taggart) in the video we used Chad's brother (Mike Kroeger) for bass, and (Theory Of A Dead Man's) Tyler Connolly played lead guitar in the video with me and Chad."

Spider-Man: Music From And Inspired By also features songs by Sum 41, Alien Ant Farm, and the Strokes, among others.

KORN: How We Managed To Spend $4 Million Making "Untouchables" - May 9, 2002

KORN frontman Jonathan Davis and bassist Reginald "Fieldy" Arvizu recently did their best to explain to Britain's Kerrang! magazine how they managed to rack up $4 million in production costs for their forthcoming CD, Untouchables. Here are their statements, as quoted by Kerrang!:

Fieldy: "We moved to Phoenix and rented five houses for $10,000 apiece for four months. We came to LA, rented five more houses for $10,000 apiece for four more months. We went to Canada and rented a house for $8,000. That's a week, not a month. Does that help explain it?"

Jonathan Davis: "The whole album probably cost us around $700,000. The rest of the money that went out was to our crew and paying our bills, because we were off the road for so long. We don't want our crew to go off and get other jobs so they can't come back to us, so we had to pay high salaries for two years almost, which is a lot of money. That's why they say it cost [$4 million], but it was just keeping our people on retainers and we put that on the record budget."

NEWS - Foreigner's Lou Gramm On Touring And Recovering
    05/09/2002

(5/9/02, 12 p.m. ET) -- Foreigner is set to embark on a tour with Bad Company starting May 31 in Pompano Beach, Florida. Singer Lou Gramm is currently singing to tapes, doing vocal and physical exercises to get in shape for the tour.

Gramm has been battling the reoccurring effects of a brain tumor. Most of the tumor was removed a few years back, but some of it remains. He told LAUNCH that he now knows what he can do to improve his situation and he's learning to deal with some of the things that he can't change.

"In terms of danger, I would say I'm out of the woods, but the damage that was done will keep me on my toes in terms of what I do to myself, how I take care of myself," Gramm explained. "I'll probably be on some medications for the rest of my life. I know for sure I'll have sleep apnea for the rest of my life. That's something where you go to sleep and you stop breathing. It requires you to wear an oxygen mask while you sleep. That's something that doesn't go away."

According to Gramm, he was born with the tumor, and it grew as he got older. He first started getting intense headaches in 1996 from the tumor. He also experienced severe memory loss and, ironically with no humor intended, double vision.

OZZY OSBOURNE And Family To Receive $3 Million For Book Deal - May 9, 2002

Simon & Schuster imprint Pocket Books will reportedly pay Ozzy Osbourne and his dysfunctional clan $3 million for two upcoming books — a paperback companion to their MTV reality smash and a hardcover family memoir. The Osbournes tie-in will hit stores in November and the memoir will be out in spring 2003.

The book deal comes on the heels of the Osbournes' reported $20 million deal with MTV for two more seasons of their show.

"The Osbournes are a popular phenomenon of the first magnitude" said Simon & Schuster Adult Publishing Group president Carolyn Reidy. "Their appeal is multi-generational and covers the entire political and cultural spectrum. We're bleeping delighted to publish them at Simon & Schuster."

Rush tour to be 'very, very visual'
By PAUL CANTIN -- JAM! Showbiz
TORONTO -- When Rush hits the road this summer, expect the legendary rock trio to boldly go where no Rush show has gone before.

Alex Lifeson revealed to JAM! Music that the setlist for the upcoming tour has been finalized, and while he refused to get specific, he did indicate that some songs from Rush's back catalogue will make their live debut when the group hits the road in support of their latest, "Vapor Trails."

"We have the setlist together. In fact, Neil (drummer Neil Peart) started rehearsing this week. I will start as soon as this business (of promoting the release of 'Vapor Trails') ends. I have a couple of evenings just to get started.

"A lot of the material on this tour, we haven't ever played before, or haven't played in a long time."

Lifeson said that while sorting out the tour setlist, he and bassist-singer Geddy Lee recently listened to such early Rush albums as "Caress Of Steel" (1975), "Fly By Night" (1975), and "Hemispheres" (1978).

An online fan petition (rushpetition.com) has been appealing to the band to devote a portion of the upcoming shows to some neglected parts of the 17-album Rush catalogue, and c. Current voting has "Camera Eye," "Hemispheres," "Cygnus X-1", and "By-Tor And The Snowdog" as the most popular fan picks.

When asked if any of those choices will be in the final setlist, Lifeson was coy: "Maybe they are, and maybe they are not."

He did confirm that the band's live presentation would be the kind of elaborate, multi-media feast fans have come to expect.

"We have some great stuff going on. It has to be very, very visual," he said.

The tour kicks off June 28 in Hartford, CT, and arrives in Canada on July 17 at Toronto's Molson Amphitheatre. (More on Rush)

STEVEN ADLER: I Would Consider Reforming GNR Without AXL - May 9, 2002

Ex-GUNS N' ROSES drummer Steven Adler recently told his official fan site that he would consider putting together a new version of GNR with former bandmates Slash, Izzy Stradlin and Duff McKagan, but without frontman Axl. "I think that would be totally great, too, but it's not the same. It's like the STONES without Mick Jagger. But, I would love to do a record with those guys and like have Eric Dover, who was on Slash's solo record, f.ckin' sing. But without Axl - you need to hear the voice, it's like QUEEN without Freddie!"
