    Frank Oz Eyeing Columbia's Powers
    Thursday, May 2, 2002 12:52 CDT

The Hollywood Reporter says that Columbia Pictures' is moving ahead on another comic book property involving superheroes titled "Powers." Their "Spider-Man" opens on Friday.

Frank Oz is in negotiations to direct "Powers," based on the Image Comics book of the same name created by Brian Michael Bendis. There is no start date as of yet.

"Powers" is set in a city that is populated by superheroes, villains and the like. It focuses on a homicide detective named Christian Walker who solves crimes that are superpower-related. In this particular instance, he leads an investigation into a killer who has been killing, one by one, the band of superheroes that had been securing peace and enforcing good will in the country.

Emmerich Predicts The Day After Tomorrow
    Thursday, May 2, 2002 1:01 CDT

Universal, Fox and Paramount are the frontrunners in the ferocious bidding battle for "The Day After Tomorrow," a spec script for a big-budget, high-concept sci-fi film in which the world is ravaged by global warming.

Variety says the film will be directed by Roland Emmerich, who nearly destroyed the world once already, with aliens in "Independence Day." It appears likely that Emmerich will have a greenlight for a fall start.

The Simpsons Not Close to Ending
    Wednesday, May 1, 2002 6:32 CDT

Just a note to concerned "The Simpons" fans, reports of the imminent demise of Homer Simpson and his beloved but dysfunctional cartoon family are grossly exaggerated, their creator said on Wednesday.

According to Reuters, cartoonist Matt Groening says television viewers are going to have "The Simpsons" to kick around for years and years to come despite what the headlines of the British press might be saying.

Groening strongly denied a British report from The London Financial Times that he was planning to wind up the series shortly because it was getting harder and harder to find funny things to say.

"I was misquoted and misunderstood. I don't want anyone to think I am predicting the demise of the Simpsons. They will live on with new adventures for years to come. As long as there are things to make fun of we will be around," the Los Angeles-based Groening said.

    BOSTON NEWS, COMPLETE WITH DISCLAIMER!:
Official Boston news for the first time in a while:
"Boston has plans to tour this summer behind a new album that is about to come out on Artemis Records. The group, or more accurately Boston mastermind Tom Scholz, has spent more than two years in a basement studio working on the record. 'We believe they will be touring this summer and fall, but there's no start date yet,' APA Senior VP Troy Blakely told Pollstar. The band last toured in 1997. The three-year-old Artemis Records label, co-founded by former Warner Bros. Records chief Danny Goldberg, reported plans to invest $1 million in marketing and promotion, and to initially ship at least 500,000 copies of the record."
The disclaimer? Well, I'm told to "Please remember that this is Boston, and dates are never firm until they are in the past..."
    Can't argue with that!

MIKE BORDIN: MIKE PATTON Will Always Be Known As Ex-FAITH NO MORE Singer - May 2, 2002

In an extensive Kerrang! article outlining FAITH NO MORE's history and the current activities of the group's former members, bassist Billy Gould, keyboardist Roddy Bottum and drummer Mike Bordin discussed the possibility of a band reunion at some point in the future. Here are their comments as they appear in the magazine:

Mike Bordin: “I was in FAITH NO MORE for 15 years. We were a good, honest band, and I was only ashamed to be in that band on a couple of occasions. Now if you're talking about [Mike Patton], he'd probably say that there were only a couple of occasions in his 10 years in the band that he wasn't ashamed to be there. Patton probably didn't see any difference between us and HANSON, for instance.

“Patton will probably work with every single person in the world rather than come back to us. In his head, he's got it all worked out, and he feels superior about it. But you know what the bottom f.cking line is? I don't care. I've played with OZZY and KORN and JERRY CANTRELL, I play drums, and I'm not 'Mike Bordin of FAITH NO MORE.' But every time I see Patton mentioned in the local papers wherever, he's still 'Mike Patton, ex-FAITH NO MORE,' and that's the huge irony. Patton won't go back and [be part of a reunion], but he's still making a living off it. And you know what, that'll probably torture him to the end of his days.

Billy Gould: “If [Patton] said an emphatic 'No' to a reunion, that's fine with me. Patton was in the band for half the lifespan of FAITH NO MORE, so his relationship with that band is different from ours. The hard work was done when he joined.”

Roddy Bottum: “If I look back on the whole experience, I have a really unpleasant feeling. From day one, it wasn't that fun in a lot of ways. If it wasn't for the fact that people still appreciate what we did, I'd say all those years in FAITH NO MORE weren't worth it.”
".....and Harry Potter and all of his wizard-friends went to Hell for practicing Witchcraft. The End." -Ned Flander's version of reading "Harry Potter" to Rod and Todd.

    Hulk Teaser on Entertainment Tonight
    Thursday, May 2, 2002 8:37 CDT

Entertainment Tonight has announced that it will have a first showing of the new "Hulk" teaser which debuts in theaters with tomorrow's release of "Spider-Man".

Marvel mania is in full swing as 'Spider-Man' swings into theaters this summer, and next year at this time? It's all about the comic-book hero, the Incredible Hulk! Only ET has your extra early look at the super-green guy and his new flick on tonight's show. Don't miss it!

Under the very expert care of Universal Studios and famed director ANG LEE ('Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon') comes the big-screen effort, entitled simply 'Hulk.' Up-and-comer ERIC BANA ('Black Hawk Down') has taken on the role of Dr. Bruce Banner, originally played on TV by the late BILL BIXBY, while the Hulk himself will be a product of Industrial Light & Magic (ILM). LOU FERRIGNO, who starred as the hulk in the '70s series, will appear in a cameo in the film.

    Carey's Wisegirls Headed for Video?
    Thursday, May 2, 2002 8:30 CDT

Columnists Marilyn Beck and Stacy Jenel Smith report that if you were waiting to see if Mariah Carey would score better in her second big-screen outing than her first, well, don't wait.

"Wisegirls," which she made while she was awaiting the release of "Glitter" and co-stars in with Mira Sorvino, was unveiled at this year's Sundance Film Festival, but might never make it into theatrical release.

Lion's Gate is apparently talking about releasing it directly to video. The columnists add that "This was the picture that Mariah was counting on to prove that the disaster of 'Glitter' was a fluke and that she could have a future as an actress."

    Nyswaner Adapting Raimi's Trial
    Friday, May 3, 2002 1:24 CDT

Scribe Ron Nyswaner has been tapped to adapt the Intermedia/Pacifica project "Trial by Jury," says The Hollywood Reporter. Sam Raimi ("Spider-Man") is attached to direct and produce the project, which is based on author-historian D. Graham Burnett's nonfiction book of the same name.

The movie follows his experience as a jury foreman in a gruesome New York murder case. The case included transvestitism, male prostitution and rape and a jury sequestering that lasted four days.

Farrell Signed for Alexander the Great?
    Friday, May 3, 2002 12:53 CDT

Columnists Marilyn Beck and Stacy Jenel Smith reports that Colin Farrell ("Hart's War," "Tigerland," "Daredevil") may be the one who'll be suiting up to play Alexander the Great. They say that the 26-year-old actor has been tagged by Oliver Stone to play the acedonian conqueror in a film that was to have had Heath Ledger as star.

Larry Cohen, who wrote Joel Schumacher's upcoming "Phone Booth," in which Farrell stars, tells the columnists that Stone got an advance peek at the thriller and was so blown away by the young actor's work in it, he signed him to be the Great Alexander.

Cohen also noted that "Phone Booth" was far from easy to bring to screen and that an impressively long list of stars, including Will Smith and Jim Carrey, were supposed to headline, "but decided they didn't want to have to carry such a difficult load. Colin is remarkable."

Davis Confirmed for Under Siege 3
    Thursday, May 2, 2002 11:46 CDT

Australia's Empire magazine has confirmed that director Andrew
Davis's next movie will be "Under Siege 3".

The mag says the "Collateral Damage" director is happy to stay within the genre - quite possibly because he's helping resurrect the career of another fallen action hero in Steven Seagal.

J.F Lawton, screenwriter of the first "Under Siege" and its sequel returns as well.

According to one of our sources, Fox have booked studio and location time for a certain film called "Die Hard 4" for Queensland. Now, Bruce Willis isn't happy to be doing it - but he's contractually obliged to reprise his role. The reason Queensland has been chosen is because of the script's jungle setting in, and for three months beginning later this year, Willis and rumoured co-star Ben Affleck will call Australia home as the film is made. My source explains to me that despite the widespread movie world recoil on terrorism themes, war violence and airplane hijacks and crashes after the September 11 Trade Centre attacks in New York, there was little to alter in the action-packed script for the new Die Hard venture. The story is ecologically-themed and is about terrorism in the jungle with big international conglomerates ripping South American jungles apart, literally killing off tribal communities. What is becoming more of a worry for the producers is that they can only schedule the 13-week shoot when Willis and co-star Affleck. During the past 15 months there has been no time when could have been available simultaneously. Add to this quandary, apparently the initial three directors the Die Hard producers courted have are not in favour with Willis, but an announcement on who will be at the helm of the Far North celluloid activities will be made in a matter of weeks.

    May DVD Preview
The best month for DVD in the first half of 2002.

May 02, 2002 - May is by far the best DVD month in 2002 thus far. There are so many great discs hitting stores this month that some people are going to have a very hard time coping with all of the DVDs that they must buy.
From Harry Potter, a new special edition of Memento, to great two-disc sets of From Hell and The Others, there is no doubt that May is a sign of things to come for 2002 DVDs. This is only the tip of the iceberg.

    1. Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone
    Release: May 28, 2002

As excited about Memento LE as some of you may be, this is the biggest DVD release this month. With the movie being the #2 all-time grosser in the worldwide box office, this DVD stands a chance of shattering sales records when it hits stores on the 28th.

    2. Memento: Limited Edition
    Release: May 21, 2002

The original Memento release was pretty bare bones, but this two-disc set is ready to fix that. In the unique packaging you'll find Director's Commentary, the complete script of the film, a new DTS audio track and much more.

    3. From Hell: Director's Limited Edition
    Release: May 14, 2002

Fox impresses once again with an amazing two-disc "Limited Edition" of the Hughes Brothers' film adaptation of the Alan Moore graphic novel. The set is packed with special features including commentary from the duo and much, much, more!

    4. The Others
    Release: May 14, 2002

If From Hell doesn't provide enough chills for you, the Nicole Kidman ghost story hit arrives on the same day in its own two-disc set that is equally packed full of goodies.

    5. Traffic: The Criterion Collection
    Release: May 28, 2002

Three commentary tracks, twenty-five deleted scenes, film and dialog editing demonstrations, additional footage featuring multiple angles, and more can be found in this amazing Criterion edition of the Steven Soderbergh drug-war drama.

    6. Ocean's Eleven
    Release: May 7, 2002

One of the most entertaining flicks from last year arrives on DVD in the first part of the month complete with two very good commentary tracks, and a couple of decent featurettes.

    7. Legend: Ultimate Edition
    Release: May 21, 2002

The Ridley Scott fantasy epic (and cult hit) makes its long-awaited release on DVD this month complete with the original International Cut with the Jerry Goldsmith score, the US Theatrical Cut, and a wealth of cool extras.

    8. Vanilla Sky
    Release: May 21, 2002

Cameron Crowe's bizarre and challenging second outing with Tom Cruise hits DVD towards the end of the month with some decent special features.

    9. Star Trek: TNG - Season Two
    Release: May 7, 2002

Paramount delivers the second season of the classic show on a six-disc set that collects all twenty-two episodes of the series' second season. The extras and presentation on the set is just as good as the first season release.

    10. The X-Files: The Complete Fifth Season
    Release: May 21, 2002

The last "good" season of The X-Files arrives on DVD this month with all of the extras that you would expect, but also 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen video!

    Other releases this month include:
    Waking Life (5/7)
The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh (5/7)
    The Parent Trap(5/7)
    Swiss Family Robinson(5/7)

    Carter & Spotnitz on The X-Files 2
    Friday, May 3, 2002 7:59 CDT

Cinescape spoke to both both Chris Carter and Frank Spotnitz, creator and executive producer on "The X-Files," about the upcoming sequel.

First off, it seems Spotnitz's new movie deal with Dimension Films won’t be effecting his work on the second FILES feature.

"I suppose it could, but I don't think it will," Spotnitz says. "I think I will be able to do both. I hope so. That's my intention, anyway."

"I see the features as stand-alones," Carter told us. "But you never know – there may be things in there for the long-term, hard-core fans that only they would know, and only they would see. That might be a really fun thing to do... One of the tricks of the movie was in creating a movie for X-FILES fans and others. I don't want to go backwards, I don't want to beat them over the head. The X-FILES fans knew very well who Mulder and Scully were, and their characters didn't need to be reintroduced to them. So we had to be clever about how we told a new audience about who they were."
