I'm supposed to ask several people what they think an "expert in communication" knows that other people aren't likely to know.

For example, I think an expert can sense what the other person wants to know and give it to them before they ask for it. (and Van Halen is lacking in this area...)

I also think an expert knows how to be tactful...that is, get a point across without offending someone too much. At least, that's what *I* need to work on if I want to be an expert communicator...

Any thoughts?

I think he knows how to get the person he's talking to to the point he wants him to be.

We "normal" people often have the problem that we knew what to say, but we don't find the right words to express our thoughts. An expert of communication doesn't have (or shouldn't have) that problem.
My English sucks, but was this any helpful?

Uhh... I don't understand the question.

The people I know that communicate the best are the ones that listen well, and ask for clarification if there's something they're unsure about. They don't speak vaguely.

This might be what SwissHalen was trying to say, but I would say an expert communicator can articulate in a manner that allows the listener to understand, whether they're talking to a 7 year old or the head of quantum physics at some university somewhere.

I would also say they can express themselves with the necessary tone, pitch and body language.

An expert in communication listens as well as he/she speaks.

There's one for you - I'm still thinking about this.

An expert is probably damn good at understanding non-verbal communication[facial expressions, hand gestures (though everybody understands the middle finger), body language] because only about 10% (I think) is verbal communication.

Maybe it can be defined as someone who gets the point across the first time without having to repeat what was just said.

Being a damn good listener is also key. Everybody hears, but not everybody listens.

I'd say an expert communicator is also an expert listener and knows the right things to say as feedback to get the full picture from even a horrible speaker.

Face it, a lot of times people tell us the surface story and move on. Asking a lot of quality questions shows that you are interested in the topic at hand AND it facilitates complete understanding on both sides of the equation.

To drop a big, fancy word in here, an expert communicator is good at proactive listening

I studied communications a little while I was at college to. I am glad I never had to answer this question. I would be using alot of this same talk. The one thing I would add thought is the ability to ask questions along with the listening skills. You don't know if you have been heard if you do not ask.
