If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

If you are better off than you were 8 years ago, and you like a good economy, budget surplus (as opposed to the biggest deficit in history) and like breathing, drinking water now and then (can't drink Guinness all the time). If you care about education or about the elders who have given much to this country, then vote for Gore.

If you want a country where the entire federal government is under the control of right wing "religious" extremists led by Jerry Falwell and Pat Robertson. If you want a country where gun nuts, tobacco companies, and toxic polluters are given free reign to do whatever the fuck they want, then vote for daddy's little puppet, George Bush Jr.

Check out the Bush and Cheney records at my place....

Oh really? Then suppose you tell me what wasn't right about it. Do you mean the fact that the religious reich has controlled the Ku Klux Kongress since 1994, and now they want their DUMB ASS COCAINE ADDICT DRAFT DODGING PUPPET in the White House so they can then also gain control of the Supreme Court?

Do you mean that The Great Bullshitter and false Republican messiah Ronald Reagan (and his sidekick Halcion addict George Bush Sr.) DIDN'T quadruple the national debt and create the largest deficit in history, while building a fucking INSANE arms race and giving tax breaks to rich motherfuckers who use every available loophole to never pay their taxes anyway?

Do you mean to say that Kuwait really WAS a "democracy" and that the Bush family oil operations in the Persian Gulf (which at the time were "supervised" by Junior himself) had NOTHING to do with Daddy Bush's little war which had absolutely NOTHING to do with the security of the United States of America.

Please, feel free to point out any inaccuracies in what I said. I dare you.

While I'd like to think that the Persian Gulf War was faught to prevent a somewhat larger problem in the future, I gotta say that I think voting for Jr. is silly.

He strikes me as being a cookie-cutter canidate of the first order, controlled by his handlers. I don't vote the party, but I do vote the man. Gore strikes me as the better by far. I'd like to see the debates between the two of them. I have a feeling Gore will do better than Bush, in an obvious way.

One thing I'm not happy about at all is how the Republicans are pushing at limited national anti-ballistic missile defence. I can think of no better waste of money, nor anything with such a negative impact on relations with China and Russia. Stupid, stupid, stupid!

I can't complain much about the administration of the country the past few years. Peoples' complaints about Clinton are all based on his personal actions, not the way he's done his job. If Gore plans to keep key individuals in place, I see no reason to vote for Bush.

Bush simply doesn't have anything in his background that qualifies him to be POTUS. Texas? Please... take a look at just how well Texas is run, and you won't want to vote for Bush either.

This would all be inconsequential to me had McCain won the Republican nomination. He'd have gotten my vote.

DIF my man, we look at things from opposite sides of the spectrum. All that aside, the thing in your post that bothered me the most is the above two lines.

Irregardless of their views, I will not believe that neither Bush nor Gore care about the American public. You have to have a little faith in the system, and in the people who wish to serve it. It's worked well. Outstandingly well, in fact. We live in what is arguably the most successful country on Earth. I love to be cynical, but I can't be very cynical when it comes to our government. When things no longer work, that's when we need to get cynical.

You say you don't consider Gore to be a veteran, because he was a reporter for the Army. Man, that's insulting to about 7/8ths of the nation's vets. Very few people actually see combat. Most roles in the military are support roles, in order to make the combat troops effective. My job in the Air Force was a support role (weather).

The military isn't stupid about how it chooses to train people. If you've got a brain (and know how to use it) they're not going to make you cannon fodder.

All politics aside, I have an imense amount of respect for Al Gore with regards to his military service. For the man to voluntarily _enlist_ (he had his degree then) during a time of war is admirable. To do so when you're the son of a Senator deserves respect. He could have avoided it all with one phone call placed by his father. For someone to do the right thing--even when it isn't easy--shows character.

Bush's service in uniform doesn't impress me as much as Gore's. I'm not as familiar with it, though. Texas ANG from about '70 to '75? He could have volunteered to do a tour in SE Asia, and he chose not to. Now, I understand that. I could have chosen to take a tour in Bosnia, but I chose not to. I don't admire Bush's choice as I do Gore's.

I do like how you praise the arm's race, but attribute it all to Reagan. Carter get's the shaft historically. People give him the blame for the military of the late '70s, but none of the credit for that of the '80s. That's messed up. Every major weapons system deployed during Regan's tenure was developed in the '70s. The stealth program started then, and recieved support from Carter's administration. He pushed the 688 attack subs, which became the most successful class in contemporary times. Carter killed the B-1A, which the idiots still call a mistake. Anyone who has a simple grasp of stragegy saw the B-1A as a relic before it flew. The B-1B of the today is a very, very different animal than the B-1A. But hey, let's not look at facts...

Smile DIF! You live in America! Things ain't that bad.

Laner, in a perfect world I'd agree with you. Maybe someday technology will bring us to a point where more things become possible for a society.

Hopefully the West will continue (resume?) to help the Russians make the transition to a modern economy. It's far better to help them have success than it is to deal with them when they fail.

quote:
Originally posted by laner:
[B]well, i'm leaning towards ford's comments. i know little about the american political situation, but i'm going to offer my general political views, as i have been taught/learnt on my own, from living in canada (which is a mixed economy, not totally right, but no where near the left).

first thing's first, it is a constitutional right to bear arms in the united states. is it necessary to own a thousand? or a couple ak-47's? yeah, protection's cool, but psychopathic rampage isn't. yer allowed to own a gun here, too. it's just that we don't have as many psychpathic rampages (i wonder why that is)...

russia becoming democratic was the worst thing that could happen to them. life was way better during the communist regime. this is after stalin, stalin's reign was not communism. i believe that their economy will become healthy sooner or later, but right now, people are living in shambles. i personally believe that a perfect communist economy is the best way to run things. hence the word perfect. no country under a socialist rule is a perfect economy. every single communist leader is on a power trip. the perfect economy is one described by marx. i'm going on a limb here by writing this, but what the hell. the capitalist economy that we're living in is the healthy answer, since the government can't control all of the economy. DIF, yer right, no leader can affect the economy directly (unless yer in a communist country). as for the rich getting richer, great, but tax breaks are bullshit. that just makes the poor get poorer. i believe that it is the gov't's responsibility to help the poor people. at least there's welfare.
frankly, i don't see bush doing anything to help the poor people, prevent unneccesary murders (not that any are neccesary), or any sort of stuff like that. to me, he's a redneck.
i'm not a communist, but i'm not a redneck. maybe i see things differently, since i'm not part of the american dream, but "stomping out communism" was the wrong word. communism was fine. the leaders weren't.

don't shit on me, either. i'm just offering my views.

First off, you could own a million guns and never shoot one of them off.

    Where's the psychopathic rampage?

Secondly, Communism is not fine. The entire idea behind communism is to hand over freedom to the government and have them dictate what time it is.

    Idealistically it's pretty and friendly.

There's no way that it can ever work.

The day it does work = 1984.

There's no way to give the government that kind of absolute power and NOT have ego-maniacs seek it.

The only reason that the change of systems didn't work for Russia is because the same crooks are in power over there as before.

    They've never seen capitalism.

But I do love the "I'm not a communist but I'm not a redneck" line.

How is Bush a redneck? Both he and Gore are from the South.

But then again, Gore's flipped on so many positions you'd never know where he came from - which is JUST the way he wants it.

God this is stupid. Anyone who loves the commies and loves that ideal, should go live in that sort of state of being. Big brother in charge will lead to the death of this great nation. I could go on, but I really don't want to take up about 8 pages of this thread.
Pinkos fucking suck, and we should never ever try to be so PC that we start to become a Big Brother communist nation. We are starting to get REAL close to that as we speak. I should stop typing now, before I post THE longest thread in links history. Out.
