how do some people manage on this site to get thousands of replies and other people who are new like myself can even get a few hundred and have many pages like some of the vh forum users have. i would love my topics to get millions of replies but i do not know how to market it the way some topics must be that get 20 or more pages of replies. can anyone help with this

Hey...wen a thread gets hundreds of replies, it doesn't have much to do with *who* started the thread. It just has to do with the topic. Also, as a thread gets longer, the topic of the thread keeps changing. And the long threads on here have been going for months and months anyway...so just be patient...VH fans are good at that. No secrets there, bro - I think it just depends on your subject matter, how many people share interest in it, and the timing of when it's posted. A lot of threads get pushed down quickly as others are started, and a lot of people tand to scan the most recent threads and miss some in the process.

Good points by both the synth and the wolf.

The flow of any thread is really dictated by the response and initial interaction of those that reply. Thats where the communication starts clicking and conversations are made. Also, how interested a person is in the subject is dictated by the title, or how you advertise the thread. One other thing is the amount of replies it already has combined with how recently it was posted. For example, if this thread has 2 or more pages by the end of the day, people will click on it and read it just to see what they were missing out on. "Three pages, must be something interesting.." So it needs to hit the ground running to have longevity and mass response. You can learn a lot about marketing in this mamma jamma.

One thing I've also learned is don't start a thread you really care about on a weekend! Or a big news day (unless it relates to that news).

Probably worth bearing in mind some topics have been 'done to death' by the peeps that have been here a bit longer. So if someone new starts a similar topic, it'll tend to be ignored a bit. Especially the VH specific topics.

I think a good rule of thumb is if you get between 1/6 and 1/10 of the people that view your post to actually respond, your doing ok. so for every 100 views, thats 6 to 10 replies. That seems to be about average. If you do better than that, your getting ahead of the average.

Very few posts go on to become multi-page monsters, and often thats simply a matter of luck and being the one who gets first crack at something thats really gonna grab people.

yeah, and threads with more replies tend to be broader based, as well.
for example, the sports threads, like NHL, NBA, and MLB have many replies because there's so much to talk about, while a thread with the topic of, "shaq sucks ass, my dead grandma could shoot free throws better than him" would probably only get one or two replies, because, well, everyone knows that.

i just wanted to thank you for your very kind and understanding words. i did not realize that some threads have gone on so long. i tohught maybe it was the luck of the draw or something. i also was thinking that as a new person to this site that maybe i offended someone and was being blacklisted and screwed with. i would like to thank you once again for your kind words. with just a simple post you have put my mind at ease. oh by the way, i hope you do not mind but i saw your website linked on another of your post and i loved your site. it isn ice to know that there is a highly intelligent beutiful person out there in this forum is is so nice and is willing to befriend a new person. not too many people are that good hearted. what you did by answering my thread is called am itzvah and supposedly the more ofthese mitzvahs that you do the better a person you are. i got the feelingthat you do good deeds or mitzvans every day by just being you.

the hulkamaniac has one moe question. what have been the most electrifying topics and post on this site. i am interested in how some toopics get more hits than others. i am starting to think that is may be a child's popularity contest. i have posted on trivial and real topics and it seems that the real topics that i post where people have too look deep in themselves for the answers get little replies while trivial ones like on star wars or spiderman get millions and millions of replies. as the superhero the hurracaine would say what up with that?

You can call FORD a Republican. That's sure to get a few replies.

Remember a lot of the van halen related topics are kinda burned out right now. we've been here for 3 years or so scratching our asses and its pretty much worn them down. Thats why your spiderman topics take off- its something new.
