Yeah, Ed has always listed early Clapton as his biggest influence for the guitar.

Eddie sites Eric Clapton as his major guitar influence. He also was in part influenced by Django Reinhardt (sp?)and a little of Hendrix. Eddie enjoys listening to Steve Lukather, Steve Morse, and Alan Holdsworth.

Eddie's main Rock influences were the Dave Clarke Five, The Beatles, and Cream.

Ed was a big fan/supporter of Alan Holdsworth for a while too. Whether or not he considers him an influence or not. I don't know.

This is probably better served in the VH 101 thread since it's factoids about the band's history.

Attempting to move it there now if all goes well

He liked Blackmore, until they played a show together. Blackmore gave Ed the cold shoulder, presumeably because Ed was new, and already 100x better! Jealousy is an ugly emotion.

I read somewhere that Ed use to play Claptons solos super slow on a record player to pick up what the hell he was doing. I believe that is how he first started to learn the guitar.

I'm suprised no one has mentioned that Dave Clark Five's "Glad All Over" is what got the Van Halen's interested in rock and roll in the first place.

Thanks Glenn! Now I remember! Man you ought to be on Who Wants to be a Millionaire or Rock n Roll Jeopardy (if they didn't have rock stars for contestants)!

I started playing guitar because I wanted to be just like Eddie. But I had no idea where to begin. to simply go from being a complete beginner to playing like Eddie is impossible. So i read that he was influenced by Clapton. I therefore went and bought all the Cream albums. that was much more accessible for me. ONly thing is , now I sound like Clapton, not Eddie! oh well.
