Anytime Eddie talks about Jump he makes reference to the fact that Dave was not in favor of doing it because it was a keyboard tune. But I swear I once read that Alex was also not in favor of Jump in the beginning. Anyone else remember reading this?

What the hell do Dave and Al know? Seriously though, I don't recall reading that. Thanks Glenn. Now I have an excuse for going back and reading hundreds of pages of interviews I have saved all these years. LOL. Out

I've read that before where Ed said that Al, Dave and Ted Templeman didn't like the tune and it just so happen to be a tune Ed showed them and he said take it or leave it. The only confusing thing is... was it for Jump or for I'll Wait??? I'm beginning to remember that it was for I'll Wait. I just remember Ed saying him and Donn Landee pretty much had the whole song completed when they showed it to the band. They basically completed the song when everyone else would go home after recording and they stayed behing to finish it.

Somehow I'm thinking it was both Jump and I'll Wait that Dave and Al didn't care for, but I just focused on Jump because it's the one that Eddie always seems to make reference to in interviews. The VHE mentions that Dave and Ted were against the keyboard tunes but makes no mention of Alex. Maybe I'm dreaming, I wish I'd kept all those old interviews and stuff.

In a mag laying around here, there is an interview w/ EVH where he states that he and Donn Landee fought for 'Jump', and overtime the band 'warmed' to it, but 'I'll Wait' is (quote-unquote) "...the one they really didn't want."

EVH wrote the familiar piano riff for 'Jump' sometime in 1980, but it took about 3 years for the band to come around to actually putting it on record.

'1984' (the track - not album) was originally about 48 minutes that EVH finally whittled to under 2 mintues.

I thought Ed wrote and played Cradle on a piano with a flanger pumped thru a Marshall?? Jump was written on an old Oberheim OBX-8 keyboard... I think that was the name of the keyboard?? Look at the Jump video and you'll see the name of it and it's the same keyboard on Live Without a Net.

According to the VHE (the Bible?) the keyboards in ATCWR were done on a Wurlitzer electric piano, on which Eddie wrote Jump they first day he got it. Jump was recorded on an Oberheim OBX-A keyboard, but written on the Wurlitzer.

I read somewhere that Ed came up with the Jump riff while sitting in the back of the band's tour bus in 1980, after he had just purchased a new keyboard, and was eager to have at it.

    Basically what Glenn just said.

kids!!: Happened to re-read the 4/95 Rolling Stone interview w/ EVH, and the "take it or leave it" keyboard tune was 'Jump'.

BTW, for you smart-alecks, piano/keyboard/synth...CLOSE ENOUGH!! LOL!!

Like all the great songwriters Do from time to time, Eddie basically stole..ok borrowed the riff from Jump. There is a really old tune I can't recall the name or the band but I have heard it. A women is singing and the main riff is almost exactly the same as jump.

Don't be disappointed, Page stole/borrowed the opening riff from stairway to heaven basically note for note and the beatles were notorious for "borrowing" ideas.

Yes I did hear what Glenn was asking by Ed in an interview, but I just can't remember where offhand! What I heard was Dave and Al both didn't like it at all until they all played it together then they caught on to it!

I don't remember if they mentioned Ted not liking it though!
