In the booklet for David Lee Roth "The Best", there is a picture that was obviously taken during a Van Halen video shoot. What was the video being shot and what song's lyrics are on the page of the photo in question? Also, I've seen listed on some CD sites an "Amended" or "Edited" version of this album - what was amended or edited? (I don't know)

I think the cover was changed because you can see Dave's ass cheeks in the original version, but that's the one I have, so it must have been OK in the US.

My version is also Dave looking in the mirror and you can see his ass. I know there is another version with him dressed in karate outfit but never saw it in any store.

Glenn - do you sound the cavalry charge when you come in?!? Yeah, I have the original with the full moon version, but in reality in my opinion it's the dark side of the moon as it's in shadows and I've seen a lot worse. www.towerrecords.com does have a picture of the alternate cover, just wondering if that's all that was changed?

They changed the cover so it could be sold in discount stores like Wal-Mart, K-Mart, Target, Shopko, etc. Otherwise the stores refused to sell it. They also took the word "P*ss" (for some reason my computer won't let me type that word ) off the back cover of it.

Hey Glenn, (or anybody) - do you have information on any of the other pictures in that book? Upon closer inspection, the picture with "Goin' Crazy!" looks like it could be from the "Fair Warning" tour - same speaker setup and everything as Ed's picture on the back of "Diver Down". Too much time, I know...

I'll check when I get home, I can't remember without seeing them. The one where he's high kicking is from the Fair Warning era I think. The one near the back when he's leaning with the scarf around his neck actually says where it was taken doesn't it? I'll check later.

Yeah, I'd say the Goin Crazy picture is probably from the Fair Warning days. The one opposite It's Showtime looks like it could have been from the US Festival, or at least that era. I think the cover picture of Dave looking in the mirror was shot in Houston backstage; I think I read that somewhere, though I can't remember where. I may be wrong, but I'd say that the picture on the Tobacco Road page is from about 1988, judging from Dave's hair.

Well now I feel stupid. I was checking the pictures in Dave's book last night and there is the one that's on the cover of his Best of album. And yeah, it's taken in Houston.

Yep, the Easy Streets pic is from HFT, HOP and I came to that agreement just after I had bought it.

Okay, I've got too much time on my hands, but I left my DLR The Best CD sitting here after answering and looking at the cover today I noticed something. On the shelf there is a banana and dixie cups, a la Ice Cream Man. Damn, I need a new hobby.

Man, looking at those photos makes me think that it's time for Van Halen or Dave himself to put together a huge photo book. I'd buy that in a second.

You can still get the edited cover at any Wal Mart. The whole reason they make those stupid things is because Wal Mart refuses to carry anything with 'offensive' lyrics. They sell rifles over the counter, but heaven help us if someone said 'piss'! Boycott Wal Mart and their censorship. Incidentally, I have a friend who just thought the DLR altered packaging was hilarious, and will only call the new track "Don't Maple Leaf Me Off" for the maple leaf logo they put in that dangerous word's place.
