How many songs did VH have written before VH1 (songs that appear on an official album)?
Was Eddie playing eruption before it was released, like in clubs and shit? It would surprise me if he did because you know some cock sucker would steal it.

DUnno, but I know Ed used to play a lot with his back turned to the audience, so they couldnt see how he was doing it

Im prett sure I've got pre VH1 boots with versions of 'Simple Rhyme', Running with the devil, Im the one, house of pain, beautiful girls (bring on the girls) and quite a few others in early forms..Quite a few songs were wrangled and mashed into new ones as well - mean streets/voodoo queen being one that comes to mind . check the songlist on 'blueprint', these were all pre-vh1 demos.

I could check this a bit more but I just got outta bed and cant function properly yet

Well, after the first album, here's my list of songs that were written prior to 1978

    Van Halen 2
    DOA
    Somebody Get Me a Doctor
You're No Good (it was called Down In Flames, but it's very similar)
Beautiful Girls (it was called Bring On the Girls on the WB demo)

    WACF
    Fools
Loss of Control (they played it at the 1977 Magic Mountain show)
    Take Your Whiskey Home
In a Simple Rhyme (these last two are as old as 1974)
And the Cradle Will Rock (I've heard Eddie say that he and Al had worked on this in their earliest days)

    Fair Warning
Mean Street (used to be called Voodoo Queen)

    Diver Down
Hang Em High (used to be called Last Night)
Happy Trails was on the WB demo

    1984
House of Pain is as old as 1976

Take Me Back has the same intro as a club song of theirs called No More Waiting

And yes, Eruption was there in the club era. I have a video interview of Eddie and he tells a funny story about how Alex used to tell him to turn his back in the club days so that no one could steal his hammer on style until they had a record out.

Also, Bottoms Up is from the club era as well. It's on the bootleg of VH at the Whiskey in June of 1977.

Also, the guitar part of Mean Street when Dave says "dance baby" is from a club era song called She's The Woman.

And I think that the song Outta Love Again on VH2 sounds a bit like a song on the WB demo called I Wanna Be Your Lover.

    Hope this helps.

Damn glenn, thats fuckin crazy that they had all those songs before an album. I guess that just shows how talented he really is.

Well, VH had some kick-ass songs since '74, so they had a lot of material with which to work in '78 and beyond.

Damn, they were money at such an early age, weren't they?

It's been said that Eddie wasn't at all pleased about resurrecting club songs for the WACF album, but it would have been sad if we'd never gotten to hear In A Simple Rhyme and Take Your Whiskey Home done right.

Sometimes I wonder where Ed's head is at.

I mean, what makes him dig something like "Inside" but not "Take Your Whiskey Home?" LOL.

And might I add (even if I might not, I will anyway LOL), that if we didn't get "In A Simple Rhyme" we would all be the lesser for it.

Thank god Ed gave in on those.

Now what do we have to do to get a few more...?

I gotta say, "In A Simple Rhyme" is one of my least favorite VH tunes. I downloaded one of the first live versions of it off Napster and deleted it. The album version isn't bad, but it ain't the best either. "Inside" ain't that bad of a tune either.

"Take Your Whiskey Home" is pure butter in the cupboard though.

"We get to the hotel, there's people partyin' in the parking lot, people gettin' down in the elevator, wow! I swear to God I had this one chick, this chick was poundin' on my door, she was kickin' and screamin' at my door 'til about 6.30 this morning. Finally, I just said, 'Fuck it!' and let her out of my room!" - David Lee Roth
