I remember reading somewhere (the VHE I think) that the Stompin 8H tune Ed did with the Saturday Night Live Band back in 87 had riffs that were also used on Dirty Water Dog. I have the Stompin 8H on mp3 & I can't figure out the Dirty Water Dog riff anywhere. Maybe I haven't listened to it enough or something, but I'm lost. Any thoughts?

I have never heard those two put together. I have heard Eddie say that the riff to "Dirty Water Dog" is taken from a Steve Lukather song that Eddie played bass on, on Steve's record. Eddie asked if he could use it and Steve said "Shit yeah! It is your lick"

Oh yeah that's right! I remember reading that too. They said it's the same riff in the VHE, I can't find it on Stompin 8H though, I guess it's on all 3 tunes.

Four tunes.... The riff is also found in the 1986 unreleased VH track "I Want Some Action." And, IWSA sounds very similar to Steve Lukather's "Twist The Knife," even including the opening guitar harmonics.
This guitar riff in "Dirty Water Dog" the VHE is referring to can be heard just as the lyrics begin.
And, of course, the riff is also heard in "Stompin' 8H."

Twist the Knife kicks ass - it is almost identical to Stompin 8H excepts Lukather uses lyrics and Eddie had the brass SNL band. That Lukather cd showcases some good chops...also Ed's partner along with Brian May on Starfleet Project which can be found on Napster from time to time
