We know that the first song written with Sammy was WCTBL, and the first with Gary was TWILY. Anybody know what the first song Dave and Eddie wrote together was?

I thought the first song that Eddie and Gary wrote together was Without You. I read something from Eddie about the day the two finally met face to face, and Eddie said that a few hours later Without You was done. Granted, Eddie also said that he had written the first 2 verses himself, so perhaps you're referring to the first song they wrote together from scratch, I'm not sure.

Was TWILY written previous to that when they were sending tapes back and forth?

Off in the interviews section you'll find one with Gary. He says that Eddie sent him the music for TWILY, and he wrote the lyrics. Gary said it was the first that they'd collaborated on.

I believe that Gary mentions WCTBL as being the first song written with Sam, and each time I've seen Sammy solo he relates the story of himself and Ed sitting down and writing WCTBL as their first together.

Minor correction on that one. Gary doesn't say that WCTBL was the first Ed and Sam wrote together.

So anyway, back to the original question...What was the first song Ed wrote with DLR???

I have no idea myself. Perhaps it was Running With The Devil? or D.O.A. (I know that was on the second album, but it was written earlier...)

    Or maybe House Of Pain?

    Anyone know?

quote:
By Gary Cherone
The first song we wrote was via a phone call, "That's Why I Love You," which was music he already wrote and sent to me

You're right MikeL, I'd never realized that that tape they'd sent back and forth might have been TWILY.

    It's odd, because check out this interview question and answer from Eddie in mid 1998;

I read where originally you got a tape from Gary, and weren't really impressed with it.

Eddie: No, I wasn't at all. Because what he tried to do was second guess me and do what he thought I would want. And that's the last thing I want. So I told him, 'why don't you just come out?' You know, over the phone just doesn't work.

I wonder if that song was TWILY? The VHE does say that they wrote it over the phone but couldn't agree on the vocal style it should have. Probably explains why it didn't make it onto III, although it still came very close.

Back to the original topic, to narrow it down a bit, I would say that the earliest song that they wrote with Dave would be likely to be one of the songs that they did on their first demo. Those songs were Angel Eyes, Believe Me (aka Take It Back), Take Your Whiskey Home and Simple Rhyme. I believe those songs were recorded prior to Michael Anthony being in the band, which would lead me to wonder if Mark Stone, the original bass player, was pissed off to see two of those songs on the WACF album with none other than Mikey's name as co-writer.

    All speculation of course.

Yeah wasn't the first song with Sammy Sumer Nights? I read that when VH and Sam first got together that Eddie played the music and Sammy improvised the lyrics, and that was what they ended up using on the album.

Summer Nights and Good Enough both existed musically while Dave was still in the band. Maybe that's why Summer Nights isn't considered by Sammy to be the first song they wrote together.

It is true that "Summer Nights" music was written while Dave was around, but I am pretty sure that it was the first completed song with Sammy Hagar.

Now I also thought that "House of Pain" was the first song Van Halen wrote with Dave. I read somewhere it was part of their original demo and only later surfaced on "1984" as a selected track.

I was just watching LWAN yesterday and before they played Love Walks In Sammy said it was one of the first songs they wrote together.
