I've been kicking around the idea of getting a tattoo and the Sledgehammer Dude from the 1984 tour backdrop and t-shirt seemed like a cool idea. Does anybody know the meaning behind the cartoon? Where could I get a nice clear picture of it?

Go to this link and click on "Little Man Story" on the left hand side. That's the original thing. Tells you the whole story of the Little Man. I've also considered getting that tattoo'd, but I'm a wimp.

Whose idea was it to use it on the 1984 tour? My bet is on the Picasso Bros. (DLR and Pete Angelus, former art director).

That I don't know, but it is a cool logo, you can see it from the 101 Freeway on the side of the Western Exterminator building in Hollywood.

I'm sure it was Dave's idea to use the Hammer dude. It was this kind of humorous creative touch that Dave brought to "Classic Van Halen". Dave was usually in charge of cover and tourbook art, when he was there. I think Al took over that stuff after Dave left. If Dave is back, I'm curious to know what if any creative control Alex will relinquish to Dave. Since Dave's departure, the cover artwork has taken on a dark more serious tone. I loved the "5150" cover art, but I wonder if Dave were in the band then, that "muscle dude" might've been some well toned, female body builder, with her cheek hangin' out.

I also figured that it was Dave. Personally, I hope Alex relinquishes all artistic control to Dave. The artwork for Classic VH and DLR solo projects was always far more interesting that post-DLR VH (with the exception of the DLR Band CD - which looked like it was made at the local Kinko's). Compare the covers of Balance and III with Fair Warning or 1984 or even YFLM (average album, great packaging).

Sometimes I wonder how much extra credit Dave takes for things that may have only been partially his idea. Dave is a master at embellishing his stories, which sure as hell makes them entertaining, but surely the whole truth tends to get lost here and there. I remember seeing an interview (it may have been the US Festival press conference) when Dave takes full credit for the error in their version of Pretty Woman. Now surely a part of the song being missed would be partially, if not totally the musicians fault, not the singers.

I'm not criticizing Dave, because clearly he's a creative guy that sees things with a showmans' eye, but it's hard to believe that every creative touch in the original Van Halen was strictly his doing, as he implies.
