Most bands have a pretty short lifespan and very few will be around into their 30's and further. Since rock and roll image is so important to the young audience, I'm assuming that Dave (especially) wanted to appear as young as possible, and therefore have as many years of percieved youth as possible. Don't forget that Dave was 23 and a half when VH 1 came out. His target audience once they got out of the clubs was probably around 16-20, and with their first album he was already 4 years past that himself, so he was likely very aware of that age gap.

I never got why they did that either.

I used to think that they were SO good at such a young age, that makeing themslves out to be younger would floor people THAT much more.

Not sure why it should have to be this way either. I never got why just because someone hit the big 4 0 they weren't "allowed" to make popular music anymore since the teen crowd won't listen to someone their parents' age.

*shrugs* Oh well. How young did they say they were when they started out?

I thought it was because they could sign a more lucrative contract with the New York Yankees

I agree with the comments about age not mattering with respect to musicians, but that's coming from my perspective of being 29 years old. I can't say that I felt that way when I was 15 or 16. I would suggest that when most of us were 16 we thought that 30 was absolutely ancient. And that's what I'm sure Dave was thinking when he wanted to lie about their ages. An audience wants to be able to relate to their heroes, and it's much easier, when you're young, to relate to people of a similar age. Dave knew they'd be primarily gunning for that under 20 audience, and would have wanted to seem as close to them in age as possible.

And like Brett said, the music that Edward Van Halen was creating at such a young age was (and still is) absolutely staggering.

Well, in the case of Ed, great things come in small packages....
