    huh? can anyone clarify this?

    Copied from Microsoft Encarta 2000:

Monroe, Bill (1911-1996), country music singer, songwriter, and musician. Known internationally as the Father of Bluegrass Music, a genre that he single-handedly developed and named, Monroe is distinguished by his staccato mandolin playing and what he called his "high, lonesome" vocals. Monroe took Appalachian mountain music and added a hard driving beat, a five-string banjo, and a touch of blues. His band, the Blue Grass Boys, provided the training ground for such country music virtuosos as Lester Flatt and Earl Scruggs. Country artists Vince Gill, Ricky Skaggs, and Emmylou Harris were influenced by Monroe as were rock music legends Buddy Holly, Bob Dylan, and Eddie Van Halen. Many of Monroe's songs also were successfully performed by other artists, including "Blue Moon of Kentucky," which became the "B" side of the first single Elvis Presley released on Sun Records.

Hard to say if that's true at all, but with a father like Jan Van Halen, it wouldn't be a major surprise to find out that Eddie would be influenced by this type of artist. Eddie, like any artist, has probably filtered a million songs and artists and taken pieces from many different places.
