Hello all. I hope the 12;12;12;5-2=3 means something good, but who the hell knows. Now, if you were VH's new manager what would you do?
I would do the following. Have the band record a new album and film a video before any announcement was made. I would also set up a tour and an opening act with all the details ready to be released at the same time. I would then do a PRESS RELEASE with some new photos of the band to all media outlets. (At least those who still care about VH) And on the same day of the press release, I would have the single/video released to radio, the website, MTV, VH1 and the Entertainment Tonight's of the world. I would release the Video only a week or 2 before the release of the brand new album with DLR. The tour would start about 1 month after the album is released so VH can do some pub for the album and tour. I would also have VH1 do a Behind the Music to release the Sunday before the tour started, and to show the first night of the tour on their Opening Night Live show. I think all these plans above would be enough to draw back old VH fans and hopefully recruit new ones and let VH take their place back on top of the rock world. Well?

What a juicy idea, if I were Van Halen's manager, what would I do? First of all, I would advise the band to sever all ties with anyone related to what's been happening for the past four years. I would then force Ed at gun point to pick up the damn phone, call Dave and make nice. Bury the hatchet and start over at the beginning. A new album must come before any tour. No videos, not just yet, let the music speak for itself. Roll out an uptempo, heavy rocker to radio for the first single. The band should hook up with VH1, fuck MTV, and do a big two hour documentary of the making of the record to air just before the tour begins. After a hugely successful world tour, I would then make it my business to insure that Dave and Eddie continue to get along, even if that includes locking Al in a cage 24 hours a day, only letting him out to play. These guys should be like the Stones or Aerosmith, they should never give up their craft. Great musicians make music, that's what they're supposed to do. The quote in my sig line says it all!

This thread has dropped several pages here in Main. I think it's a good topic, so I'm going to send it to the Opinions forum to see if it's got some legs there.

If I were VH's manager I would quit and look for an unknown (was going to say unsigned) act that wants to work. What is there to manage?

Of course I would get the boys to work with Roth again, get them to interact more with the fans, and make Ed realize that just because he brings back Dave, doesnt mean he is an "oldies" band, or a "nostalgia" band.

Ed relax, plug in your guitar, smile, and play, be happy, its music.

It seems fairly clear that VH don't know what their next move is, meaning the calendar is wide open. In order to fill that time, I would advise the band to celebrate their past. First on that list, only because it would be the easiest, I would have Live Without A Net put on DVD with the Toronto PPV; I don't know the ins and outs of DVD's, would that all fit on one disc? If not, put it on 2 discs, but keep the price low.

Second, I would dig through the vaults and release a complete concert on video from the Dave era of the band. Which concert, I don't know, because I don't know what the band has. To me, I'd think it would be best to be either a Fair Warning concert (Oakland??? If it exists in complete form) or a 1984 concert. I think the FW tour was the height of their musical power, and the 1984 tour was the height of their cool.

It's time for Van Halen to start publicly burying some of the hatches, to stop looking like a bunch of in-fighting idiots. A celebration of their past is an excellent step towards changing their Jerry Springer-like public image.

If I were their manager I would hire a babysitter and go to lunch.

I would make sure I had an updated resume and maintained all my industry contacts and connections, because God knows how long anyone could stay in such a position .

It's about compression, Glenn. The lower the quality of the video and audio, the more they can fit on a DVD.

I think if I was VH's manager I'd make them figure out what the hell they want to do so they do it and get it done before they've waited so long that it can't happen (if that isn't already the case). I mean, really, if you want someone to sing for you, get them. If you want to retire, retire. Just stop pissing around and do something.

If I were a rich man....hmmmmm

If I were the manager. Despite the Sammy era coming first in my heart, I do want to see what they've got with Dave. So, I'd figure out a way to keep the 3 babies in line and get an album in the can. Assuming it kicks ass, I would set up a gig on Letterman, post the appearance on the web site, all without revealing the singer. Just a simple Van Halen will be performing on the David Letterman show on...

Maybe, if there was an awards show, I'd do that instead, but, again, I'd do the same thing, wouldn't announce the singer.

I'd make sure they opened the show, and would have Ed, Al and Mike up front, singer hidden. Whether it's Letterman, or an awards show, just have them announced, Ladies and Gentlemen, Van Halen. Then I'd have Ed do a quick musical montage of all three eras, just a couple of riffs to keep people guessing, like he used to do in his solos with Mean Street. Start a tune, then stop and smile. Start another, and so on, for maybe three or four tunes. When he does the Mean Street riffs, then they kick in with the band, Dave comes flying out, the place goes nuts, and Van Halen is back. If done right, with enough build up, the rest sells itself. Hit Letterman, Leno, SNL, play everywhere, because they have some ground to make up. Do some unannounced bars on tour, keep the buzz going. Work, work, work. They would come all the way back, If I was the manager.
