comparing Journey or Foreigner to Black Sabbath. Back in the day, both Journey & Foreigner had lead singers with good strong voices who were capable of doing scorching rocker songs but their bread & butter were radio oriented love ballads (sound familiar). Meanwhile, Black Sabbath's sonic boom hard rock sound, featured a flamboyant lead singer with a unique voice and outrages personality (sound familiar). IMO, all the bands' I mentioned did a great job at what they did but it's pointless to argue which is better because it's all a subjective thing. Totally different animals! Just an observation, folks!

Comparing Dave era to Sammy era is like comparing Journey to Black Sabbath? Sweet Mother o' God! That is ridiculous! The biggest difference between Sammy era and Dave era is vocal style and lyrical style. Otherwise, the music is just about the same. Hell, throw the Gary era in as well! Dirty Water Dog has traces of Push Comes to Shove, Ballot or the Bullet has traces of Meanstreet. Sammy era....Don't Tell Me and Good Enough have the low D tuning and sound of Unchained, the solo breaks on Source of Infection sound like the solo breaks on I'm the One, most of Source of Infection sounds like Hot For Teacher........
Sammy era VH released Why Can't This Be Love and When It's Love for the radio and suddenly they are like Journey? What about other songs they released to the radio: Black and Blue, Poundcake, Finish What You Started, Don't Tell Me, Amsterdam..... Those songs are NOTHING like Journey or Foreigner.

No, the two eras can EASILY be compared as they not "totally different" as some people claim. They are quite similar.

One of them is like a pressure cooker ready to explode while your are on the edge of your seat wondering what is going to come out and bite you in the ass. The other is safe, solid and capable. No danger to it and a little too soft and cuddly sometimes.

For you diehard Roth fans, comparing DLR to SH is like comparing the Yankees franchise to the Red Sox franchise.

IMO, it's like comparing the 80's L.A. Lakers to the 2000-2002 L.A. Lakers.

How 'bout that Brett???

I like the copmarison of Classic VH to Sabbath. I think when Halen blew Sabbath (who were a drug band messing with Rock at the time) off the stage on Sabbath's Never Say Die tour in '78 - it was like a kind of passing of the gaurd.

And the Sabbath split w/Ozzy reminds me of the VH split w/Dave as well. In 1980 - who could've imagined that Ozzy would stay successful and Sabbath slowly become a joke. Like in '85 - who would've guessed that Dave wouldn't remain a major star and VH fade away. Life is weird sometimes it'll kick you in the ass when you think you've it figured out. As Tony Iommi and David Lee found out.

Sabbath while a joke in the 80's have come back to legendary status again - its Van Halens turn next - passing of the gaurd remember!

van hagar sound like bon jovi with a better guitarist - I'm not being a smart ass - thats the best way I can describe it. No way near as distinctive as the Classic VH sound.

Passion, fury, humour - thats Van Halen.

Expensive producers, token ballads, record exec's demanding hits - that van hagar.

In all fairness, Hagar wrote lyrics to the music Eddie gave him. And EVH happened to be in love with the keyboards starting in 1984, and it just got worse for a couple of albums.
Roth would have had to come up with something for some of that same music had he stayed.

I agree, there definitely would have been a huge difference, though.
I asked a ref if he could give me a technical foul for thinking bad things about him. He said, of course not. I said, well, I think you stink. And he gave me a technical. You can't trust em. -
