Geez, just ONE thing?! I don't know, I guess if I had to narrow it down to just one, it would have to be the most obvious thing to pick ... that they were putting out music! (with Dave, of course ).

"When I first heard "Runnin' With The Devil" on the radio, I was stunned and found myself dizzy, walking through my high school hallways thinking, "What was THAT?!"
Eddie Van Halen was so innovative and kicked so much ass, and David Lee Roth was for a time indisputably the Greatest Man in America.
If aliens came down and challenged us to a Battle of the Bands to decide the fate of Planet Earth, I would feel very confident putting early Van Halen forward as our champion." -Tom Morello

I have an answer for this, but I'll get to it when I wake up further.

For now though, it's the perfect topic for the Opinions forum, so I'll send it there.

Honestly, if I could change one thing it would be the loss of Gary. I really felt, and continue to feel, that it was VH's opportunity to become a stable, long term proposition. They would have had to scale everything back, but I would have been fine with that. They could have continued to make albums (perhaps on a different label, one that wasn't holding them to their previous multi-platinum standard), toured theatres and done the kind of music they wanted. There's a multitude of bands that exist by selling at that level, and there's no reason why VH couldn't have become one of them.

To me, the band had the chance to run their course with Dave, and then again with Sammy. I don't think they had that opportunity with Gary, and I think that's a shame. Now, regardless of what they do next, I really think the band is going to be finished very soon.

To me it's all about the music and I just wish the boys could get their act together and make some kick ass rock n' roll. The one thing I'd change would echo Glen's comments-a second album with Gary and letting that music collaboration run it's course. I'd also would have welcomed Ray Danniels never entering the equation and letting Sam remain in the band for the rest of Van Halen's career.

I would go back to late 1984, early 1985, would've said, "Edward, my man, you need to get yourself a solo project to get all your keyboard experimentation out of your system - maybe go play organ at Kings games or something - while you and Dave and the rest of Van Halen continue to crank out enjoyable rock 'n roll music. 'Kay?"
