I just dont understand.....
I've been told that the lyrics to this song went over my head.....
This song rocked more than VH has in 11 years ?
I thought MWM was pretty middle of the road myself....and I still say it was boring.... it was predictible....
as far as rocking....how about "dont tell me" now that song ROCKED!!!!
Me wise Magic ?
Ive been a VH fan since VHII ....so dont act like I am a VH newbie....try and tell me there's some magical, mystical thing about Dave's lyrics....
Ed said it himself after Sammy joined...."we sing about the same thing we always have...boy meets girl...boy inserts penis..."
VH with roth in the early days was great....Vh with Sam was great....the question at hand now is who do they go with now....
It is my opinion that Roth cannot move beyond the 80's and be popular....he will always be a nostalgia act ...I told people at work that I went to the Sam and Dave show...most of the people knew who sam was, and asked me who the other guy was....
interestingly enough...on the way home tonight...a local classic hard rock station played 4 VH songs in a row...3 of them were Sam era songs....but you see...according to people on here....you never hear Sam era songs on the radio....hmmmmmmm......
I hear "finish what ya started" 4 or 5 times a week.....
imagine that....
ok...I'm done venting....for now....

The playing in this song is outstanding IMO. The band sounds really tight and I liked the way it was produced. Somehow, Dave always brings the best out in Ed whether he likes it or not. I know that VH had this music before the BOV1 recordings but the aggressiveness that Ed displayed while recording it is fantastic.

Nobody has to like this song but just understand why others do.

It's a good Van Halen song, no matter who is singing it.

You may not like it, but there was nothing predictable about it, in fact the song is like in 3 different time signatures for one thing, and Ed's playing is all over the place.

I totally disagree Dave did anything to inspire Ed to play it like he did, but I absolutely believe Dave pushed himself to deliver something up to lofty VH standards. While his voice isn't as sharp as expected, you can tell he worked hard on that song.

Let's not forget that those two songs were co written with Glenn Ballard, Desmond Child.

VH3 was also co written with other people.

What was supposed to become the follow up to VH3 was done by only Gary, Eddie, Al and Mike.

For some odd reason, Eddie went through a phase where he felt he needed input by other people when writing music.

Does anyone know if this was Ed just expanding or was it the influence of Ray Daniels?
What is understood, need not be discussed.

When I first heard that drawn out intro to MWM...I got chills...And it made me realize that Van Halen is so unique...they wanted to make a 6 minute single..and they did.

No one does that anymore, but the more I listen to that song, the more I am amazed at how many different sounds the band fit in there...and even though DLR's voice isn't amazing...it's still pretty damn cool. I also like the way it's a very bassy song, something which we VH fans don't often enough get to hear...as well as some classic VH harmony.

I think this song was DLR's answer to Humans Being, a little funkier, a little more mysterious, a little darker...

But, I have no doubt in my mind, that an album at that time, with a tour following, would have been great...

Now however, I lean towards Sammy coming back...but back in 96,97 and 98...there could have been some pure magic with the Diamond One...

Actually, I thought what ended up being released (MWM, CGTSNM, and VH III) was written only by the members of VH. I thought Dave rejected the idea of using a song he didn't write. The only VH song where I've heard that an outside writer was used was in the lyrics for "Humans Being", which Bruce Fairbairn helped write with Sammy (in 15 minutes on the hood of a car....) Do you have any URLs that give songwriting credits?

Cheers!

by van halen standards... MWM is a good song, with great guitar work and fucked up vocals.

dave sounds like his dick is caught in his zipper whenever he screeches for the high note. just horrible.

Me Wise Magic and Can't Get This Stuff No More were indeed cowritten by Glenn Ballard, but not Desmond "Aeroshit" Child. And I have never read or heard that VH3 had outside writers. Where did you read that?

In Daves book, he says Desmond Child was brought in. He said Desmond writes for Bon Jovi, and that would be sphyllis for Van Halen. He didnt take or give credit for the lyrics. He also said he was NEVER in the studio with the other 3.He was in an ajoining studio, brought palm trees in to jazz up,called it Club Dave. Every day, during breaks, every one is in there but Ed,Alex n Mike. He said Alex freaked out the whole time, screaming. This is why there will never be a tour with Dave, maybe a studio album at best.Well,i Love both those songs.Do some more

I thought both songs from 96' with Roth "rocked" ! Ed's work and the sound they attained was a sign of great things to come. Too bad it didnt work out. I dont understand how Dave was at the studio, and the boys wouldnt "hang" with him. Alex screaming all the time ?? YIKES !! Relax, have some fun

I dont know why Ed would want to bring in outside people to help ? He is the 'musical spring" of the band. Maybe he was burnt out for a while there and wasnt happy with what he was coming up with.

I love Roth and hate Sammy, but those 2 songs from 96 sucked big ass.
Humans Being was far better than those 2.

And remember I hate Sammy ...

me wise magic is the bomb people. every element of the band is in that song...period!

if there ever were to be a reunion, i would love for them to close the show with that song.....while eddie is holding that high note after the solo on his sustainer and dave is yelling out with mikey "do you believe"? alex goes apeshit and the classic vh logo lites up in flames behind alex and is raised to the top of the arena while they play out the song. that's how you end a fuckin show baby!
