I know I'm gonna take some flack for this, but it needs to be asked.

Why was the Roth era better?

Face it. Deep down we all know that the Roth era was "classic". That's why we call it classic Van Halen. What makes it classic? Was it the chemistry between Eddie and Dave? Was it because they covered so many songs? Was it because it was first? What was it? Why is the Sammy era inferior?

Here's my take on it (short version):

    Dave + Eddie = chemistry

Let the debate begin. Lets try and keep it civil though folks!

    Van HALEN = chemistry

    Van Hagar = contrived

    Simple as that.

    Welcome back, Van HALEN!!!!

...It's the BAND and Dave is really the cat that can front VH. He sang his ASS off and was really cool. No cheese here guys, this is filet Mignon! - Steve Lukather's comment after witnessing a Van HALEN 2007 rehearsal

Well, for me it's because I discovered Van Halen when they were Dave, Edward, Alex & Mike. I mean, I was never a big heavy, hard rock fan, and here was a band that was a hard rock band, but their sound was so clean and listenable and their lyrics weren't doom and gloom and other mystical sh*t, but instead good times and fun. I still remember the way those horns that open Van Halen and "Running With The Devil" cut through the silence the first time - just nothing else like it at the time or really much since. And "Dance The Night Away", the song that first sold me on Van Halen - just, you know, I was in High School and going to dances for the first time and I really wanted to "Dance The Night Away" but I was chicken sh*t. The subsequent albums got me through the rest of my High School years with all the stuff that went with that - Diver Down was the soundtrack to my graduation days, that's why I can never speak poorly of it - and on into my two years of college, with 1984 highlighting a magical summer. By the time Dave left and Sammy came along, there were a million imitators of Van Halen, and without Dave's look on life to go along with Edward's playing, the magic just wasn't there anymore. Not to mention I wasn't a big fan of Sammy at the time anyway. I've got nothing against Sam now, but he just doesn't have the lyrical prowess of Dave to go along with Ed's magic. Not to say he can't craft a decent song, just not likely to put something that you have to listen to a few times to catch the joke or the meaning. But I know there are people here that closed out their adolescence to the post Dave era and they prefer that, nothing wrong with that. But for me, the Dave era will always rule, nothing he's possibly doing now can diminish that.

There's 100 reasons why and it would take me all night to sit here and list them. Reason number one is the first Van Halen album.

Yes. That simple. Plus, Dave was hot and Sammy was never sexy. Too much of a clown.

Why? Well rock and roll is a bunch of things thrown into a blender. Power chords, Jack Daniels, getting "chicks", laughing out loud, making fun of life and rocking the hell out every day of your life.

It was the soundtrack for Keg parties, gettin laid and minting out that big block chevy over the winter and then you rolled down your windows and entered into summers with tape deck burnin up and sailing across those alpine speakers, roachclip feathers hangin form the rear view.

Okay the "Devil" is hell in human form (well throw VH3 in there too) but David lee Roth he embodied what rock and Roll was. He was rock and Roll in human form. He makes music fun. Van Halen always owned and ruled the summer.

Now almost a life time later I look forward ti summer rolling around slippin in that Van Halen 1 CD asd I roll onto the highway, shades on and the wind rippin thru the hair and people lookin at yah funny as you rock out with roth and ther boys.

Dave was like the drunk uncle every one has in there family...somewhere.

It's interesting getting the female perspective of how things were. Dave was a legend back then. Every guy wanted to be him and every woman wanted to do him. His stage presence is second to none.

Van Halen was party music with Dave. It was all about having a good time with your friends. It was magical back then. When Dave left, the party left with him (to me).

Now I don't want people to think I'm slamming Sammy. I know there are lots of Sammy fans out there that even like that era better. I think the majority of Van Halen fans liked the Dave era better though.

For me it's no contest. Van Halen became just another band to me after Dave left. Dave solo was never near as good as when he was in VH either, but I liked solo Dave better than VH with Sammy.

Van Halen's sound changed on 5150. It became more pop sounding. It lost it's party edge. To me Van Halen died when Dave left and it it's place was a new band with the same name.
