After listening to "Serious" a few times, I think it'll be pretty hard to beat as a first single by the new VH/Dave album. I'm not saying impossible, I'm saying pretty hard. IMO it ranks up there with MWM, but with a better song structure.
The dynamics are there, the sound is very contemporary, the back up vocals are very good. I'm still puzzled by the title for such an agressive song, though. Let me know your thoughts, guys.

gimme a break man, that song has it's moments but it's nothing compared to anything van halen can do... i mean, the music is decent but i certainly wouldnt wanna go down the road singing, "serious JUJU"... juju??? that's not lyrics i wanna hear... what happened to the fun sammy??? van halen and sammy couldnt get along with during the making of balance because eddie wanted to get more "serious"... while sammy wanted to stick with fun lyrics about smoking crack and shit... and yet in his post-van halen days we hear such serious songs as "little white lie," "serious JUJU" (i still can't get over that), "both sides now" and all that... now i'll admit, this is only stuff i hear off the radio because i have no desire to buy a sammy solo record... but i'm just saying, his lyrics are no fun to listen to... IMHO of course...

I've said I wasn't talking about the lyrics. Roth won't have trouble coming up with something better than serious Juju. Probably in his sleep he could find something better. But music wise, song wise, sound wise, melody wise, it is an impressive song, IMO. And I'm not even a die-hard Sammy fan, I've seen Roth solo, never seen Sammy solo. I've listen to some of the other songs. This is the best album Sammy has ever done, bar none. It beats some of the mediocre Van Hagar stuff ("Can Stop Loving You, Aftershock").
Now we'll see what Dave comes up with melody wise. It'll have to be better than DLR Band stuff, coz don't tell me that "Slam Dunk" is better than Serious Juju, I'll laugh my ass off!!!

    OK Tune
Cool opening. Someone said it sounds like Pink Floyd (Run Like Hell) and they hate Pink Floyd so they hate the song already. OK, very open minded.

After some "clever" lyrics from Hagar, the main riff comes in. Not a bad riff. Kind of cool, but after this repeatative riff, the tune falls apart.

    Where's the "hook" ?

    No singable chorus!!!

Just a bunch of , "du nuh nuh's:"...played at differnt places on the neck. Where's "shine on, shine on" (Humans Being) or something like that. It sounds like Sam played the first thing that popped into his
    head.

This is why Sam needs Ed.

I am a firm beleiver that if Van Halen would release a tune exactly like this with Roth on lead vocals, most hardcore DLR fans would say the song rocks. Just my opinion. Nothing to back it up but a gut feeling.

Serious Ju Ju is a decent song, but I'm hoping the new Sammy CD has better songs than it. It sounds alot like Salvation on Sand Hill to me. But I really believe that Van Halen could write and record much better stuff than SJJ.

Hopefully we'll all live long enough to make the comparison.

I've had a real good listen to "Serious JuJu", and I am totally floored by it. I've also heard "Let Sally Drive" and "Shock-a-Doobie". Sammy definitely went down a different road with the new material. With some artists, change is never a good thing and doesn't suit them as a new sound. But with Sam's new stuff, I think it's his best yet. Some might say he's ripping off the sound of the youthful bands that are out there right now, but I think he just took it and showed how to do it better.

It's funny how with VH, if you have 10 people talking about one topic, you're going to have ten different opinions
I'm pretty amazed some fans pretend they listen to lyrics first when listening to VH. Gimme a break! Although some lyrics are incredible (mostly in the Roth area), I've yet to meet one fan who rates them above the music.
For "Serious", you have to admire the production, above VHIII, DLR Band (hahaha...), maybe even Balance. If the new VH album goes towards the same kind of sounds, I know many people on this board will be happy!
I was just trying to talk about the song objectively, without any reference to the decades-old (yawn!!!) Sammy/Dave debate.

Here's one that loves Slam Dunk.
Just heard Serious JuJu, but Slam Dunk outperforms it. Ray Luzier's double-bass drums on that songs alway give me an adrenaline pump. No comparison here.
Anyway, it's a good rocker, way better than today's music. Sam's found his dimension, hoping he'll stay there

I've heard a good chunk of Ten13. Every song I heard was good. Every song was just a wee bit different.

Don't judge an album by it's single

I've listened to Serious Ju-Ju a few times and I just can't get into it. IMO it's just not that good. I hope the rest of the album is better.
