Well, barring the events of september 11,

Are we here to celebrate Van Halen's musical legacy or to procrastinate over their future?

Van Halen have left enough music to satisfy me for the rest of my miniscule life let alone the last 3 years.
I joined the LINKS because I thought I would be able to communicate with like minded Van fans from around the world, not cynical naysayers who are too quick to stick the knife in,and let's face it ,they're enough of those in the mainstream media as it is without so-called fans bashing the band anytime they feel the chance.

I am looking for a site that really does appeciate what Van Halen have done and will do in the future, not what they are'nt doing now.

Is VHLINKS.COM it, or are we on a continuous soap opera whingefest?

It's not US who are doing the procrastinating.

Van Halen have left enough music to satisfy me for the rest of my miniscule life let alone the last 3 years.

Ok then...good for you. The rest of us have been led to believe that the band has been working on music for their next cd.

I joined the LINKS because I thought I would be able to communicate with like minded Van fans from around the world, not cynical naysayers who are too quick to stick the knife in

I think 2 years, 10 months, and 25 days or so far surpasses any 'too quick' remarks. We've waited far too long as it is.

I am looking for a site that really does appeciate what Van Halen have done and will do in the future, not what they are'nt doing now.

There is a lot to this site, and most of the people here certainly DO appreciate what VH has done, but...you just said it yourself: "will do in the future". We can't rehash the past much more; this place has had almost a quarter million posts!

Is VHLINKS.COM it, or are we on a continuous soap opera whingefest?

Ummm...VH has caused the soap opera. For chrissake, it's been almost 3 years since Gary was let go, and they have nothing to show for that time frame. There is simply no VH to really talk about now, here or anywhere else. It's going to stay that way until they act, or at least announce something CONCRETE.

Their attitude and behavior over this drought is a lousy way to treat a fan base, and they deserve every whine, bitch, moan, and complaint they get at this point.

Am I still a 'fan'? Yep. But, due to their poor way of handling the situation, I will not buy the next (if there is one) release. I refuse to financially support them; it's my only real 'voice' in the matter. If they would tour, I would not buy a ticket. I MIGHT consider going if someone gave me a ticket, and even then, I would not buy so much as a t-shirt this time around. Sure, they won't know that I refused to buy anything, but I will, and that's about all I can do.

If I was just satisfied to listen to what they've done in the past, I wouldn't be here to begin with. As it stands, I come here to converse with fellow fans about OTHER things. I've made some friends here, and I've made some enemies, just like anywhere else in the world. This place is another community, brought TOGETHER by a common interest, but not bound to or limited by that impetus.

If you have some great new insightful angle to discuss about the band, great-let's hear it. Otherwise, we've been over the same ground ad infinitum. That's why there are forums here that do NOT relate to the band-to allow us a place to shoot the shit and call each other silly names and talk about the minutae of life.

I am speaking for myself here, and do not claim to be representative of anyone else's opinions, but I am sure that many others agree with me: after (basically) 3 solid years of NOTHING, the old topics are, well, old. One would be hard pressed to introduce the same old stuff and expect to get a flood of responses at this point. Many users have been here for a LONG time and have simply grown tired of the same 'Sam vs Dave' topics, the 'name the next singer' threads, the 'best song from 1984' posts, etc.

People feel let down at this point, and if you really notice, even whining about it is an old, overdone topic. What's left to talk about? Like the Starship Enterprise, we are here to seek out new life, new civilizations. Even Captain Kirk eventually took an administrative job, and didn't return to the ship until some bizarre NEW challenge arose out of the ether.

It sucks that this is the way it is, but the band brought it upon us, and they've brought it upon themselves. That's not cynicism; it's reality. And it's a shame.

Now I read a lot here but don't post a lot. That is the biggest piece of shit since Zadian has been posting his anti-Dave bullshit here. Even though the next release won't include Sammy, you will still buy it.

But you can't "appreciate what Van Halen will do in the future" until you hear it. Hard to appreciate something that has yet to be written, recorded, and/or released.

And part of speaking of VH's future is coming to an understanding of the present situation that will one day lead to that future.

Die hard fans are passionate, that's the type of fan that a band should strive to have, but the downside to that is that sometimes that passion can go either way. It can't always be an ego stroke for the band; a true fan is going to call it like he/she sees it, not say what the band wants to hear.

I will NOT buy the next release, regardless of who is singing on it. Your supposition is wrong. So that means YOUR post is far more of a piece of shit than mine, since mine is correct. I have said it before, and I'll repeat it until it has come to pass: I WILL NOT BUY THE NEXT VH RELEASE. I would happily pirate it, but I will not allow any of my $$ to become revenue for the band. Even if it's the greatest piece of work they ever put out, it will not have my financial support.

And I don't think Zadian's anti-Dave ranting is bullshit; it's his opinion, and he has stated that it is nothing more than his opinion. Argue it with him if you so choose. My statement is NOT a matter of opinion; it is, without a doubt, a fact, to be proven if/when the time comes.

    Hey Abe! buddy,pal.
Did ya go to the Grand Prix at all??

    Hey cheer up Man!
IF you really have had it up to the eyesockets with VAN HALEN's selfish totally unwarranted mental abuse then there's always GUNS AND ROSES.
Ah fuck it! save your money man.

Who needs eddie's boring, repetitive, typewriter riffs anyway.
Sammys annoying, loud enough to scare dogs, yelping or Dave's dull monotone vocals and crappy non-sensical lyrics and Mikey's efeminate back doo..(OOPS)I mean Back-UP vocals.
Save the spinola bud,who needs those crappy fucks anyway when Limp Biscuit are so much better.

When I first joined VHLinks/VHForums, there was plenty of constructive Van Halen talk. Lately, yes, there has been some griping about the band but you know what....it's all justified. The band has been too silent. Yes, Eddie having cancer is a big and personal endeavor but little updates once and awhile wouldn't hurt. I believe that there is still some good constuctive Van Halen talk. But there does come a time where there isn't much stuff left to talk about. I see a lot of topics being repeated. I should know cuz I've repeated a couple myself. In conclusion, I don't see this site being a 'whine festival' so keep up the good discussion folks.

Seriously though, we've nearly discussed everything. We've covered all the topics. I only post when it's something new. I don't feel the need to tell everyone what I think should be on BOV2 for the 538th time. Actually, I think I responded to that topic like 10 times but reguardless, look at it from our point of view. Dave and Sambo's birthdays are coming up. VH's aniversary of the loss of singer number 3 is coming up. We've heard endless rumors, been through a lot flame wars and wasted too many hours here(especially Glenn). See what most of us mean.... well, see what I mean.

Amen. The Van Halen Mailing List, which got its start some 6 years ago, has long since exhausted all the topics. People dis that list because "they don't talk about Van Halen," but the truth is that there's so little VH and so much more else to discuss that there's no point in rehashing the "who's your favorite frontman" thing again.

Instead, the members of the VHML and its many splinters have become friends for the sake of being friends, and not just because they're all VH fans. They often get together and hang out in real life, too.

When I meet friends from the lists, we rarely talk about the band. It goes without saying that we all love the music and miss hearing from VH. What is understood, need not be discussed. Because of this, somehow we manage to have a hell of a time even though the band's not doing shit. The mailing list itself may fall apart, but the friendships don't. We have each others' emails and phone numbers.

Relatively newer fan communities like this one aren't quite at that level yet. I don't mean to sound like a know-it-all or condescending towards Forums, but we still jump up and down over each little tidbit. Not as much as the PD does, though. (They're younger than us.)

Sometimes I wish that all VH fans could be part of the same group. Then I think, "It would never work...there are just too many of us." And then I think, "It so rocks that after all this time, there are still so many of us!" And it makes me proud to be part of something much larger than myself.

When asked, "Are we here to celebrate Van Halen's musical legacy or to procrastinate over their future?" I would say that neither of those is the main purpose of this place. Instead, it's to bring fans together. Community among fans isn't just a byproduct of getting together and celebrating VH (or bitching about VH), but is a worthy end in itself.

So let's keep doing what we're doing...
