Here's a thought...
If you look at bands that have sustained the test of time and are still around like Aerosmith and Bon Jovi, they have gained massive radio play through the occassional power ballad. Aerosmith especially with
DWMAT from the Armaggedon soundtrack. That tune was practically solely responsible for launching them into overdrive in the 90's.

VH had a string of successful power ballads during the Sammy era...Is it possible they could do this again with Roth? We've never heard a ballad from Roth (Women In Love might have been the closest)and as much as we all wanna hear VH rock their ass off with a more classic VH sound, could the element of the power ballad be a successful endeavor for re-surfacing their popularity on the commercial airwaves?

What do you mean Roth-era Van Halen never had a ballad? What do you think "Hot For Teacher" and "Ain't Talkin' Bout Love" are considered?

I just can't see Dave singing what I define as a power ballad. I can see him singing bluesy slow songs like Black Sand or Tell the Truth, those kind of vibes. Or a song in the style of Crazy by Aerosmith. But not the boy meets girl, I love you type of lyric at all. It wouldn't suit Dave at all, and I can't see him doing it.

I do think it would be curious to know how much pressure WB would exert to get some ballad type material that they could sell to a wide audience. Aerosmith didn't just fall into releasing a lot of ballads, it was somewhat pushed upon them as they say themselves in Walk This Way. One can assume that VH too would face a certain amount of label pressure to conform to a similar format.

I don't consider those song ballads.

IMO, Little Dreamer, Secrets and I'll Wait are ballads though.

Ballads GOOD!

But honestly, a power ballad is about the fastest way for 85% of the people on this board to write the band off as crap.

There again - Dave needs to re-invent himself. I's ure he's never even tried.
And I would challenge anyone on this board to come up with a GREAT band that didn't do ballads. They're a staple part of musical culture and they have mass demographic appeal to the target audience......FEMALES.
If we all looks back..VH's first #1 album (5150) was thrust to the top by two power ballads.

If DLR and VH could do a song like 'Black Sand' or 'Good Times', it would be amazing! Can they do it? I think so.

They also have been playing the same boring song for the last 25 years, so that ain't much of a criteria.

good point Brett... I like AC/DC, they're okay. Put on a hell of a live show when I saw them...But I gotta admit, they are a band that does not have a lot ofdiversity in their music.

Bleh. Do you spew the same rhetoric on all the boards????

I seriously doubt that ballads are why Van HALEN Sam era is still not around. Even YOU don't like Danniels. What do you think are singles nowadays? Rock is just about dead. Some stuff creeps through; but if you think for even a minute that a straight rocker with a new Dave VH would be in the top ten then you really are crazy. As much as I want VH on top; and they always will be in my eyes; you HAVE to appeal to the top 10 mindset to be on top commercially. Can Dave era VH do this? I don't think so. Gary didn't. Sam came close. Of course, when Sam era did it they were "sell outs" but if the high lord Dave did it, it would be ok. Whatever. Van Halen will NEVER be on top again unless they appeal to the top 10 market. Unfortunately for them, they won't do it with Dave era rock. Was MWM a top 10 single. NO. It's not the music; it's the musical climate. I want VH on top as much as the next guy, but it's not really gonna happen. Dave or no Dave. Granted; they'll be on top with US; but we're hardly the majority here.
