Would we have heard the same music with different lyrics? Would VH have been radically different? I tend to think even with Dave they'd have had to change to remain fresh.

I'm not really sure what direction they would have gone in.

One thing I do think though, even if Dave had stayed, odds are that eventually their sales would have slowed down somewhat, or they would have made a mis-step with one of their albums. Every band that's been around for any length of time eventually releases an album that just doesn't catch on and sell up to their usual level. It's my feeling that VH would have had a III type release (acceptance wise) eventually, even with Dave in the group.

Yeah, but they would have set an example to stay away from annoying synthesyzed music. This is a major reason why Dave left. If he stayed Eddie would not have been involved in using a keyboard as much. Instead VH and the rest of the music world have steered down a different path.

And with Jump such a huge hit, Dave surely would have been shrewd enough to realize that there was a place for keyboards in VH's music after 1984.

Plus, though it's gone down in history that Dave was against Jump to begin with, he's made no attempt (and there's no reason why he should) to distance himself from that song just because it is keyboard based.

I disagree...Eddie played And The Cradle Will Rock on electric piano through a stack...He said Dave was cool with it because it didn't sound like keys...And Dave certainly had no problem with the #1 success of Jump...right?

Don't worry, bro. It's not pick on g1golo day.

But I've never believed that Dave's leaving VH had anything to do with Eddie's playing synth. If you listen to Eat 'Em And Smile, and Skyscraper there were a lot of synths.

Hell, every song on Skyscraper had synths. LOL.

So, Dave left VH because he didn't want Eddie Van Halen (a classically taught pianist, no less ) playing synth - Only to go solo and have the likes of Jeff Bova, Jesse Harms, and Brett Tuggle tickle the ivories?

    Nah...

I imagine if you take 5150 and EEAS/SS and blend them you'll have the sound VH would have carried the rest of the '80s, with the occasional throwback mixed in the bunch.

But honestly, by the time the '90s rolled around I'd wager they would have begun to move in the direction of what we got with Balance/HB/CGTSNM/MWM. I think Eddie's style was influence pretty much by what HE wanted to work on next, and his interests probably wouldn't have changed much.

Then again, had Dave stayed the followup to 1984 might have been a diamond release as well, which would have only built the band up to '80s fad level, which may have caused them to crash and burn in the '90s, instead of be basically the only band to hold over (until they thought it brilliant to kick out Sammy).

Sad to say but I think that they would have eventuelly gone "pop" ala Aerosmith.

Sammy re-invigorated the band, Dave got to do his own thing and "sow his oats"

Years later, the 2 sides are ready to continue on with a fresh attitude and creativity.

oh BTW, Gary was Van Halen's "mid-life crisis"

You know, I hate to say this, but if Dave had stayed with them, I think the farewell tour would have come and gone long before now.

I think their follow up to 1984 would have been a huge seller, but not as big as 1984. It would have become their only #1 with Dave until BOV I came out. Maybe a Grammy for Best Hard Rock Album. I think the sales would have dropped off and the 1990's would have seen VH numbers like Def Leppard today. I do think they would have had more video representation on the music channels and a stronger following then those divided by the two and a half eras. Nevertheless, these are "would of's", "Could -of's" and "should-of's." Who knows? All we have are the facts. Van Halen did well with Sammy and Dave plummeted. Van Halen flopped with Gary and Dave was just about written off for good. They now need each other. Everything takes full circle. We're just about to connect it.

Not sure how long the band would have stayed togethor, but I always thought that 5150 with DLR's influence would have been killer, same with some of the songs on EEAS. I hope that Ed can have as much fun with Dave now, as he did with Sammy on the 5150 album and tour. Lets face it, Ed was having a lot of fun with Sammy. Like the previous post: its time to come full circle.....
