I started a post previously asking who VH had considered as a singer immediately after Dave left the first time (ie Jimmy Barnes, but the post turned into who people preferred. I thought that if we looked at who they considered in the past it may be an indicator as to who they may go for in the future. Does anybody know who was considered or who auditioned?

Mitch Malloy was in the running for awhile. I haven't had the opportunity to hear him, but from all stuff I've read including the interview with Mitch that was up at the Dome and here not too long ago that it was a great colaboration that was only ruined by in now infamous '96 VMA apprearance. I would like to think that he could be a future option.

That Danny K. guy, who was producing the follow-up to VH III, has worked with James Taylor, so let's not try to go by that logic. Ha!

My recollection is they wanted Patty Smythe but she said no, as she wanted to stay on the East Coast. This is from a fairly recent (couple of years) interview with her.

They auditioned and apparently offered Mitch Molloy (spelling?), but I'm not sure how that all played out, it's almost like they had Gary before Mitch bowed out. I'm guessing Ray Daniels was totally fucking around with it.

The only other one that apparently they considered was Sass Jordan.

My opinion on the above? If you want a chick, which would be fine with me, Sass and Patty were good ideas. I heard some Mitch samples from his web site, and I personally feel he's got the same flat tone without depth that Gary has. Nice voice, just something missing. Jack Blades is the same way. Can't put a finger on it, though. No personality to it?

Ed has such a full and rich guitar sound, you need a full, rich voice to go with it. DLR had it, Sammy has it, Gary didn't.

I'm so sick of people making lame ass assumptions. A producer's role is to capture any given artists ideas and both refine them and get the best possible sound to tape. Danny Kortchmar (forgive the drunk spelling) produced James Taylor's album. So what? And that's a bad thing for VH? Yeah, god forbid someone who can do right by a singer/songwriter's album become involved in fleshing out Eddie's vision as a song writer and Gary's lyrics into one cohesive album. Some call closemindedness a desease. I'm starting to agree. And that is the only reason VH is as "Terminally Ill" as they are right now. And some of the ignortant assholes on this site are only serving to bring a band that they claim to love closer to extintion. What we have to worry about more than how VH is preceived at large, is how the fan base itself effects the band from even trying publicly anymore

Peace. And let the music always prevail!

    Rock on.

I can think of one female singer that might fit that nobody has mentioned - MELISSA ETHRIDGE.

Everyone always compared her to Janis Joplin but she always reminded me of Sammy Hagar.

I think the Mitch Malloy story brings a little light in to VH land, so here is a link to that:
    (Scroll down a little bit)

He seems to be a nice guy. But somehow Ed and the boys always find a way to fuck things up.

Danny Kortchmar worked with Billy Joel too...Now, that'd be somethin to see. Billy could pull it off, he was in a few "metal" bands in the late 60's and early 70's before his solo career got started.

also, Phil Collins contacted VH?!?!?!?! jeez....what the hell was wrong with Genesis?
Gozer the Traveller will come in one of the pre-chosen forms. During the rectification of the Vuldronaii the Traveller came as a very large and moving Torb. Then of course in the third reconciliation of the last of the Meketrex supplicants they chose a new form for him, that of a Sloar. Many Shubs and Zuuls knew what it was to be roasted in the depths of the Sloar that day I can tell you.
