I just recently purchased a burner and have been living on WinMX lately. I've downloaded a few songs by Van Halen. Remastered mainly. Now over the course of thirty years I've bought almost every VH album several times, so I feel justified in picking up these songs for free. Is that fair? And what about the new fans who are discovering VH for the first time through shared file sites? Opinions????

I also use WinMX. Like you, I've downloaded quite a bit of VH. I have every album, excluding the last. I don't think I'm screwing VH. It's just that I'm at my computer a lot and I like my music. On another note, I think it's funny that Metallica spent all of their time and hard earned money fighting Napster in court only to have dozens more like it pop up in its place. And believe me, on WinMX you can have all of the Metallica you want.

I think they'll survive. I still feel guilty when I'm downloading COMMERCIALLY AVAILABLE stuff sometimes, but sometimes it's one or two songs by an artist that I really have no other interest in the rest of their catalogue. I don't know what's going to happen to NAPSTER, but I would be willing to pay, say .25 a song if there was a service supplied by the record companies with any song imaginable and like I said I would pay .25 a song. Sure at .25 you could download a whole album (in most cases) at less than the cost of the album, but I don't think that's what the majority of people are using this service for - I think a lot are like me - they either want a song or two by an artist, or they just want to sample some songs they eventually go out and buy. Why punish the many for the deeds of the few? Plus even if I download a whole album, the record company would be selling the music without having to print a CD, or print the artwork or provide a jewelbox or ship to a retailer. Figuring there are some albums that aren't available in CD format currently, this would also allow people to add those albums to their collection without the record company having to press any more copies (although I feel all albums should always be available, no matter how sh*tty someone thinks they are) - heck they could even make the artwork downloadable for an additional fee...

I agree with you both. To be honest sites like WinMx and Morpheus have gotton me into alot of bands\music that I never would have purchased otherwise. In those cases, I usually go out and purchase the actual CDs. Sounds like promotion to me! Oh yea about Metallica, I agree! The word for today is BACKFIRED!! ##### As a side note, are the VH remasters worth purchasing? Hard to tell from downloads...

That is an excellent question. Personally, I've only downloaded bootlegs. I do like the idea of having the record company charge for downloading an album. Then the artist would be getting their royalties. On the other hand, as a teenager in the early 80's, I've copied music from my friends' cassette tapes many a times without realizing what I was doing.

I can honestly say I'm not screwing Van Halen, as when you screw someone you usually derive some amount of personal pleasure from the experience. I can say with complete honesty that the past two years have not been the least bit pleasurable when it comes to this band.

I got into this debate (the whole Napster issue) with a guy at work who played in a high profile Canadian band in the 80's.

This is what he told me:

Recording costs (basic) $100,000
Basic Video (will want 2) $50,000 each

Total costs are $200,000, and this money is usually fronted by the record company, so you owe the record company $200,000

For each CD sold the band gets $1.00
To break even your album must sell 200,000 copies, which incidently is platinum.

In the US triple all figures.

So I do feel a little guilty, but it's there, and usually I end up buying the CD anyway unless I only want a song or two.

I thought all that crap was settled with a lawsuit.
Feel guilty? Why? For burning a darn cd? I thought, for a moment, this was a thread about something Angry Dude would get mad Instead, you are worrying you are taking money out VH's pocket.
Has NBC or CBS come out with another news blip about how the web is stealing money from Sony et al?

Remember when Garth Brooks tried to ban an industry?
He tried to put out of business a used CD music store because HE wasn't getting royalties from the sale of those poor old used CD's. I don't remember exactly, but I think it just put mud in his face.
Lars(the little imp) did pretty much the same thing.
There is nothing wrong with downloading and burning a CD for your own pleasure. Where did the source come from? Didn't someone pay for it? Can't I borow a CD from a friend(well, my son's got'em all, and I'm the poorer for it ). Where did the morals for this debate come from? Disneyland?
They did the same thing in the sixties and seventies with the tape recorder.

High profile??

Hey I heard that guy had a new job now.

He has a new job now.
He has a new job now.

And it's a lot like McDonalds

What other "high profile" artists are you talking to? "Glass Tiger", maybe? Or Corey Hart? I heard the reason he never had another hit was that he was seriously injured in a head on collision that happenned late one evening as he was driving home from the studio.

The RCMP listed the official cause of the accident as "gross negligence on the part of Driver (Hart)", but we all know the truth....

He was wearing his sunglasses at night.

In the 80's they were quite big here, as was Glass Tiger.

*lol* that is too funny.

But all of those bands you mentioned did extremely well for themselves, and for Canadian music, I think anyway, and hey, Andrew Frew from Glass Tiger....potential singer #4? *lol*

As McDonald's we could all be working there soon, don't really think it is something to joke about.
