I know that the majority of people think that the production and singer on III weren't up to par but what is everyone's opinions on the actual lyrics on teh album? IMO I really like Gary's lyrics. They're deep and meaningful to me. Once, Year To The Day, Without You etc. are really good from that stand point.

One of the ones that really kills me is "the ballot of the bullet, the choices is up to you!" Man that is so bad. The music is cool but that cheesy chorus just ruins it. Overall, I actually like a lot of the lyrics on VHIII including "How Many Say I." It's a great song and it's really experimental.

I don't care much for the lyrics on III but in general lyrics aren't that important to me.

I'm not sure about this, but did Ed come up with the lyrics to Without You? Or just the first few lines?

Gary wrote the lyrics and they inspired Eddie to sit down immediately at the piano and write the music. For most of the songs on III, the lyrics were written first by Gary, then Ed wrote the music to fit the lyrics. This is the complete opposite of every Van Halen album before it.

i thought the lyrics are what killed the III album the most- so trite and simplistic- no humor, sarcasm, insight, passion- unfortunately for gary, dave set the tone for the kind of lyrics that represented VH (tough act to follow)- and gary just couldn't even come close... - not a slam on gary- i thought he was decent in extreme- but he just isn't in the same league to be writing lyrics for VH music... i felt like i was listening to a high school kid's attempt at writing rock lyrics... i can't remember all the examples of just meaningless lyrics on III because i have blocked them out of my memory! "ballot or the bullet" was definitely the worst though...

To me if the lyrics don't fit the song then I can't get into the song. For example I like the music and guitar playing on III. I like a lot of the Roth era stuff. If Roth were the singer on III then I think that the CD would have really been terrible (I know some of you already think it is). To me the serious music was the right fit for the serious lyrics. I like the Roth stuff too. Hot For Teacher, Panama, Ice Cream Man etc. Those lyrics fit the feel of the music. The music Eddie had at the time was more upbeat and "Fun" for lack of a better word. The "pop" hagar era stuff from 5150 fit with the music of that era also. For what they were I think that the lyrics on III were the right fit for that style of music.

There were so many spots on III where they seems to sacrifice melody for lyrics. It doesn't matter what someone is trying to say if they way they're saying it doesn't flow. I understand what they're trying to say with "Ballot or the bullet, the choice is up to you," but I don't like the way it comes out. A person can have views of extreme insight and profound thought, but if that person can't express those views in a manner in which "most" of the listeners can not only understand, but familiarize themselves with, then it's a lost cause. Van Halen tried to be something that it wasn't with III (which I'm sure Eddie wanted). Expand on who you are, and who your band is, but don't take a detour into deep water if you can't swim all that good. But lyrics shmirics, Van Halen III had a lot of words without anything really being said. And having a hired hand singer instead of a band member didn't really help either.

One I Want is probably the one that has the whackest lyrics of them all... only Hot For Teacher is almost as bad.

One I Want was strange. The verses sounded like some kind of message-type lyrics, then the chorus was basically "I want some chick".

And EVH slammed Sammy for the lyrics to Amsterdam.
I asked a ref if he could give me a technical foul for thinking bad things about him. He said, of course not. I said, well, I think you stink. And he gave me a technical. You can't trust em. -

    Uh, guys...

The lyrics to Ballot or the Bullit were taken from a famous speach by Malcolm X, I believe it was, not written by Gary. I love the line, "Sword or the pen can be held by the same hand." There are other lines and metephores (sp?) in that song that I love, too bad Gary didn't write them, because they're famous.

III'S Music is edgy, sharp, experimental, and somewhat alternative. The Lyrics thought are not that stylish but in some cases give it a punch. Its not a bad album, but it would have the flare of Gary if they would have done what they did at any of their live shows on tour....that was much better than the album.
