I never thought Dave had a great voice to begin with (has anyone for that matter?) Still his unique voice and delivery complimented the band in a way that in my opinion (albeit biased one) has yet to be matched.

Alot of you probably won't agree with me but
Dave brought much more to the party: smart-alec attitude, a whiskey-stained voice, pop culture lyrical references, flamboyant imagery, humor and showmanship. Dave was the ringleader in a circus. He's wasn't the star of the show, but he set everything up for the real stars...Eddie, Alex and Mike.

As I once heard him say in a interview "I'm the guy who makes the tiger appear, I'm the guy who makes him go away, and I'm the one who makes him re-appear when you least expect it"

Therein lies the elements that made the original and classic Van Halen special to me.

classic vh had that tight, live sound. that is why it is unique to me. the first few albums were just recorded as is, no mixing and polishing...more pure. that is the difference to me. as far as dave not having a great voice, i agree, but neither did janis joplin and she was outstanding

Attitude...all balls to the walls! It's evident we need a return to riff heavy, philosophical rock and roll. Nowdays it's all kid stuff talking trash. We need something clever, subtle, but unmistakeable. Sound familiar?

This is the formula for their speciality:

Eddie's unmatched guitar influence and innovation, as well as song writing ability.

    Dave's swagger and theatrics.

Alex and Mike's chemistry as a rhythm section

Sammy's vocal ability and lyrical writing

What made the original Van Halen special, aside from all their musical abilites, both vocal and instrumental, was their ability to capture you as a band. I posted something to this effect on the EUAS thread, but what swung me from Pro-Sammy (even though I still do like him) to Pro-Dave was the simple fact that all of Dave's albums were fun to listen to. They all have those kind of songs that rock, but make you feel great when you listen to them, too. The songs don't have a deeper meaning or a big political statement to them; they don't need to. They just flat out play songs from their hearts and souls and it comes across on the records as them sitting around having fun, just enjoying the ride and that's what truly makes them special. I think I'm going to cry... (sniffle)

What made the original VH special was the balance between Eddie and Dave.

Eddie was, and still is, a great guitar hero. People were awed and inspired by his playing. His style was original and his sound was impossible to immitate.

Dave was the crazy side of Van Halen. Party, pot, whiskey, EVERYTHING. He was the entertainment and the voice of VH. He was the one who brought the smiles to the faces and the standing ovation at the 1996 MTV Awards.

Classic VH is just the whole book. It hits ya right in the ribs! That's how powerful it was. It was the "attitude" and the image of VH that was also special.
The music, of course, rocked like no other. Ed's early riffs was the perfect compliment to Dave's razor-edged vocals and howling wail. Coupled with the rumble of Al's drums and Mike's bass, the whole package just rocked.
Dave's lyrics were just so interesting to listen to. His way of rapping through words and phrases made way for Ed's electric guitar passages in many songs. The problem with Hagar is that he just had too much to say. Dave said a few words, screamed and howeled and let Ed do his thing. Also, Sam's voice often drowned Ed's guitar sound. It wasn't the perfect compliment.

VH's stage presence with Dave was just phenomenal. They were indeed ROCK GODS. With Ed and his striped guitars, Al's monstrous drum kits, Mike pounding his bass and drinking JD, and ....of course, there was Dave. The ultimate showman. With his long blonde hair and his outrageous stage dress, he was a force to reckon with. Tremendous charisma, that was Dave. He had a spark that I don't think Sam ever had with VH. While Sam is a great rock n' roller, he certainly didn't have Dave's stage presence.

THE ORGINAL VH--The complete package just rocked!

One word - ATTITUDE! Dave and Eddie had it when they played together. Personally, they are as opposite as can be, but when they are together, they are magic. They have never been as good alone as they are with each other.

The High end youthful, unadulterated nonstop energy. The I don't give a shit attitude. Lets party and tomorrow we'll do it again, just better. Their sound filed me with life. The only sammy song that came close to doing that to me was Top of the World and Cabo.
