Just playin' devil's advocate here . And to get us off the topic of you-know-what. I thought I'd post a topic for debate that we can get our teeth into:

Would you say that Dave's spoken word verses for songs such as Me Wise Magic, Big Trouble, and some of the tunes on the DLR Band album (can't remember exactly which... um "Tight"?, or was it "Relentless"?)... anyway. You know the ones I mean.

Are these a sign that Dave is running out of decent melodies? I would usually prefer an actual tune for the verse y'know (with the possible exception of Big Trouble, 'cos the lyrics are great, and would obviously be difficult to set to a melody)... or is it that the backing tracks were just too darned weird to write a melody over (perhaps in the case of MWM and, hey, Sammy said he had that problem with 'Pleasure Dome' y'know?).

Or is ol' baldy just gettin' too lazy to knuckle down and write a killer like he used to?

So what are your opinions on the subject folks? Let's fight!
It'll all end in beers...

Seems his talky voice has got deeper, which I don't dig so much as his talky voice pre 1985 y'know?

Like compare Panama to Slam Dunk! and I know deeper is supposed to = sexier, but somehow in this case it doesn't y'know?

Mind you, in my experience it takes more air & effort to sing real low sometimes, so it could be that he's had voice trouble (a topic which has been covered a LOT here I reckon) on the other hand, maybe he's gettin' so into the lyrics themselves that melodies kinda get in theway...

...that's an angle I suppose. It must be hard gettin' the words right when you gotta fit 'em into a strict melody. Just freestylin' here but that brings me back to the original thing of, if he put a bit more effort in, then maybe he could do it. It's a question of what lengths you're prepared to go to to get the perfect match of melody & lyric.

But you're right, could just be a question of what he's got left to play with insofar as his vocal range. (Them bridge notes in MWM are just too fuckin' high for me though!)

I think a lot of it has to do with how Dave's vocal range and ability to hold notes has diminished. But having said that, I think his spoken word stuff can be very cool. The "A little Zen" part of Me Wise Magic really sets a cool mood; which is good too because parts of that song are way out of Dave's (and probably most people's) range. It's also cool the way he does the really low voice in Little Texas when he says "HELICOPTER".

Better that he plays to his strengths than to try to reach for stuff that he can't get anymore.

I guess it's possible that DLR's voice isn't as strong as it used to be and he likes speaking more instead of singing.

I like when Dave breaks it down and talks every now and then.

("My game is better than ever" - Slam Dunk, is the exception, though. )

When he speaks low on songs like "Little Texas," "WaWaZat," and "Me Wise Magic" it works, in my opinion.

A spoken word VH album... Now that could only pulled off by Dave, if at all.

(I really hope the band doesn't read the links for album ideas. )

Yup, Little Texas I'll allow...

As for the spoken word album, Henry Rollins would probably be willing to help Dave out on that one y'know...

Actually, with EDs singin' voice, maybe he'd be better off doin' the talkin' thing.

You know, I saw Ed on the Right Here Right Now tour and he took a verse of a tune off of Sammy (who had a sore throat) and I thought Ed sounded great!

Something obviously happened between then and H*w M*ny S*y I

*laughs* Yeah, the deep rumbling voice is so sexy it will have the 45 year old ladies in the front swooning.

"I'm gonna fuck your momma!"

But seriously, I'd rather Dave do a lot of deep talking than some of those butchered high notes on DLR Band.

Hey Stuff... did Sammy ever do any of that kinda thing apart from "Pleasure Dome"? Just wonderin' 'cos I'd assume when he's writing solo he'd make damn sure the chords in the tune could support a good tune...

This is just a style of singing that lots of artists have employed over the years: Mick in "Emotional Rescue", Lonesome Dave in "Fool For The City", Gene in "Domino" -Dave has always done this - it's nothing new: "Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love", "You're No Good", "Everybody Wants Some!!", "Mean Streets", "Panama". Just seems he's using a deep voice now!

The thing is, although those old VH tunes had talky bits, or the odd spoken line, the verses also had a set melody, and Dave's phrasing was just a diversion from that.

Whereas the verse of MWM is JUST talkin'. No melody at all. And that struck me as odd. Then there was more of the same on the DLR Band album and it got me to thinkin' that maybe he WAS runnin' out of ideas...

Offhand the only other Sammy song I can recall him doing the spoken part is in Runaround.

"Oh man it's hard enough
And you make it harder"

You know, that part.

Isn't there spoken stuff at the start of Pleasure Dome? "None of this was planned" etc. I think that's Pleasure Dome.

If not, I'm

Not to mention all the talking on Inside. Of course, the less said about that song the better.
