Now i was not much of a fan of III, but i am listening to the song "More then Words" when he was with Extreme. I must say this guy does have the voice of an angel. and it leads me to believe more that he was pressured to sing the songs on III in ways he didnt usually sing, like screeching. this possibly could have led to him losing his vopice during the 98 tour. but he does have a beautiful voice, and is a good singer.

In terms of pure technical skill I'd have to say that I think he is the best singer of the three. Doesn't mean he is the right man for Van Halen though.

I was listening to Pornograffiti in the car today and More Than Words was the one song that I skipped. I never really listen to that song, though I love that album.

It's funny about Gary losing his voice in Boston on the III tour one night, and then doing the show the next night. If you've ever heard the tape, he was really struggling on night 1, I don't know how he was able to sing a full show only 24 hours later.

I admire Gary and think he's a really talented guy.

I came SO damn close to going to that Boston show. But, I had spent my money going to Matchbox-20/Soul Asylum/Semi-Sonic the week before. Damn parents wouldn't cough up the dough.

I worked in a record store when More Than Words was a hit...It was great to see soccer moms buy the record with that song and return it the next day after hearing 'Get The Funk Out'

Gary was and is a fantastic vocal talent and a helluva showman...

Sorry Glenn...I dig MTW...I like the eclectic feel it gives to a fine album...

I think Gary was the worst singer of the three in VH.

I agree with Edeble Ed that Gary was a lot better singer with Extreme. He sounds great with Extreme, but I was disapointed in his singing on a few songs on VH III.

Sammy Hagar is greatest singer that VH had IMO. He sounds as good live as he does in the studio.

Anyway I am moving this topic to Opinions.

I think a main issue is tuning. The guitars on Extreme records and Roth-era VH records is E flat. It suits Dave and Gary more. It is easier for them. VHIII didn't tune to E flat and I think it showed. Although when I played along with the Sydney show on my guitar I noticed they tuned to E flat live. Weird.

Whatever....Sorry to break it to ya but Diamond Dave is the TRUE voice of Van Halen
What is played more often on the radio Classic Van Halen or Van Hagar? Of course Classic Van Halen because it is timeless and had attitude and simply represented the best vocals and peak performance of the band !!!

Ah, but BS2K, we're talking about singer talent, not airtime or fan preference.

And I would have to say on sheer vocal talent it's a pretty close draw between Sammy and Gary.

Ah, but Stuff No More, I don't and never cared much for Sammy or Gary's vocal performance of any kind! I am more of a fan of Dave's not because of what he means to Van Halen past and present but I just like that Raw, tenor-type , Frank Sinatra swagger voice, sing with a vengeance attitude, that Dave has always had...To have the range Sammy or Gary have just doesn't make the TRUE Van Halen magic to me...Everyone has an opinion and my opinion is Dave is the REAL vocal standout, never had a high range but never cared for that musically in any type of music, especially what MADE Van Halen so special !

Sheer vocal talent, Gary gets my nod. Sammy has a higher range, but I don't think he has the emotion in the phrasing. Technically with crescendos and decrescendos and paying attention to the feel of a lyric and how it relates to the accompaning music, Gary is top notch. Also, Gary can go through those ranges with a very beautiful falsetto. Sammy hits those ranges by singing balls out. I did see the III tour and Gary live was awesome. Most fans developed a new respect for him after seeing that tour. He pulled of Sammy and Dave era songs perfectly, without losing the showmanship side.

Gary just did not get a chance to show this talent on VHIII. Go out and find III Sides to Every Story when Gary was with Extreme and I think you'll understand what I'm talking about.

I am psyched about Dave being back, but I think there was only great things to come out of VH+Gary, and I was personally sad to see him go. I'm looking forward to Gary's solo project, which sounds that it will be out before the new VH .
