Lets say Warner Bros. put out a cd called 'Van Halen - The David Lee Roth Years' jam-packed with all the clasics, and the 3 "astonishing new tunes" - do you think it would be a big seller?

I'd say it would go top twenty, but would stick around on the charts for MONTHS!!!, maybe over a year! - you know one of those albums that sells x-amount every week. I think a lot of the nu-metal crowd would check it out - see what the fuss was all about.

I'd buy it. I doubt they would do it though because of the prior Best Of. An album full of rarities/live stuff/unreleased new songs would be huge though.

I'd buy it especially if it had some previously unreleased material on it. As for selling millions and millions of albums and sticking on the charts for over a year...I don't think so. Van Halen still has a very loyal following but their image has taken a beating the past 5 years. A lot of my friends are casual VH fans and VH is not even close on their radar screen when purchasing or downloading music.

I agree with Raldo... It would be awesome, but I don't think it would be that big unfortunately...

This is one thing I don't understand. I assume WB ownes all the VH stuff done under them. If that's the case, why haven't they tried to captialize by sending out something like that? The suits there have to know the fans are desperate for any VH morsel, and it would also make them some serious moola.

Release an old concert or two, and/or some kind of unreleased or best of thing. Hell, i'd buy it.

Sure, the new songs would make us hardcore fans happy, but casual fans already have BOV1 and they wouldn't want to buy another greatest hits album.

If would have to be filled with unreleased material for me to pick it up. I just dont think a BOVII would be the thing to do at this point.

New VH release(s)? It's music, baby. Timing is everything. Can you say Hall of Fame?

Firstly, I don't imagine WB has access to these new 3 recordings.
Secondly, I hope WB does have access to all of the recorded shows from ALL the years past if for no other reason than having someone archiving them into digital format so there is at least a possibility of a future release. If all those shows are sitting on those shelves in VHS tape of any sort, they will deteriorate and we will have lost them forever. What a shame if this is the case.

If WB has COMPLETE CONTROL over any past video/audio, then you can bet your ass it will be released. I just don't see that being the case.

It is pretty much "standard" that a record company (in this case, WB) has an artist/band over a barrel as far and owning the music goes. With the exception of Metallica and maybe a few other bands who "own" all of their recordings, the record company can basically do what it wants in terms of releasing material, with or without the consent of the band (and despite the fact that VH is no longer with WB).
As was posted before, it is all about timing. Unfortunately, the general public really doesn't "care" about Van Halen (although we do!) in terms of hearing any recordings from them. Right now, it is the "nu metal" bands and such that is the hot item. Van Halen has been silent for so long, that they are really hurting only themselves, as far as being out of the public eye. In the music world, not releasing any material in four years is about two years two many.
This sounds really bad (and I hope it doesn't happen), but record companies tend to capitalize on tragedy. Basically, if someone in the band were to die, such as Eddie (God forbid), I would bet the WB would have a ton of VH stuff released. Look at how much has came from SRV, Hendrix, etc.
Good topic, hopefully we will get to enjoy SOMETHING from the band.

I don't think WB would even have any of the unreleased stuff unless VH turned it over to them.
I don't think the label owns unreleased songs until the artist hands them over and says "here's the album I was contracted to do". I think that any other stuff that the artist may have come up with that didn't make the album is solely the artist's.
I suppose that might depend on how each band's contract is written, though.
I asked a ref if he could give me a technical foul for thinking bad things about him. He said, of course not. I said, well, I think you stink. And he gave me a technical. You can't trust em. -

You got your 2 new songs on the "Best of". Keep listening to those very average tunes and please get over the old DLR thing.
