So other bands, and Van Halen during Sammy Hagar's presidency have been accused and bashed about serving up cheese, mainly by the extremist radical FORD.

The biggest 'hits' Dave has had were cover's of other people's music, Dave also contributed to turning VH into a cover band, Diver Down is a good example.

    Covers with Dave included:
    You Really Got me
Your no Good (which sucked bad)
    Dancing in the Streets
    Pretty Woman
Where hav All The Good Times Gone
    Big Bad Bill

    Now the DLR cheese

Dance the Night Away..good song, but is commercialized cheese.

Dancing in The Streets...what a load of crap, don't know what sounds worse, the origonal or Dave's horrible hatchet job. He shoulda joined in with David Bowie and Mick Jagger on their version, bet they would have had quite the threesome on that song, right up Dave's alley I'm sure.

Pretty Woman...Dave, please, you ain't a singer as Roy Orbison was. That was an insult to the origonal. Eddie, were you drunk to allow that crap? Cheese all the way, formented mozzerella!

Jump...Jumping on the ole bandwagon with this slice of chedder, nice keyboard sound...keyboard sounds like a $20 Sears special.

I'll Wait...Sour cheese...good thing Sammy Came along so the Cheese could be done properly, that song ruined the whole 1984 album! And the 3 albums previous to it. Kinda like how Highlander II was so bad it ruined the first movie.

Scranama! ...Nice Chorus *lol* Waste of a damn good guitar line.

Then there was all the covers, and of course cheese (very bad cheese) in his solo career. Point being Dave served up his share of cheese with VH too, but the worst was all the cover songs, that was just pathetic, and Dave is still a cover artist, just look at his setlist from his last tour!

Your almost as much of an ignorant piece of shit as PaBITCH.

How the FUCK is Dave a "cover artist" by singing HIS OWN FUCKING SONGS??

"I'll Wait" was a lame song because the keyboard hook was written by Michael McDonald, the Sammy Hagar of the Doobie Brothers. And his effect on that band was much the same as Sammy's was on "Van Halen"

That "$20 Sears keyboard" Eddie used on Jump? It's the same one you jerk off to every night listening to "Cheese Comes Walking In".

There is nothing REMOTELY cheesy on Van HALEN's first 5 albums.

    Period.
    Eat Us And Smile

    Welcome back, Van HALEN!!!!

...It's the BAND and Dave is really the cat that can front VH. He sang his ASS off and was really cool. No cheese here guys, this is filet Mignon! - Steve Lukather's comment after witnessing a Van HALEN 2007 rehearsal

Just when FORD gets Pabs off his back...

quote:
Pretty Woman...Dave, please, you ain't a singer as Roy Orbison was.

Who is? Roy was totally unique.

Just because they sang the same song doesn't mean Dave was trying to sound like Roy. I'm not sure if that's even what you're arguing, but I think that VH's cover of Pretty Woman is cool, regardless. The video is terrible, though. Ugh.

quote:
Jump...Jumping on the ole bandwagon with this slice of chedder, nice keyboard sound...keyboard sounds like a $20 Sears special.

I guess that's why so many people hate it. You just never hear that song. Ever. LOL. Crappy keyboard. If only Eddie hadn't been such a tight wad, Jump might have been good...

quote:
I'll Wait...Sour cheese...good thing Sammy Came along so the Cheese could be done properly,

Way to bolster your argument, man. Let the professional Cheez-It take over, huh? I agree with you, though. Sam was much better at producing dairy than Dave.

.....and you proved what here exactly?

All bands do covers. Was Sam a cover artist while singing Dave era VH? You repeatedly bash DLR and try to stir shit up for your own satisfaction. I've always stated DLR was the true VH, but I don't make it a habit of scrapping the bottom of the barrel to discredit Sam.

Hmmm, this seems like a candidate for either the Songs Forum, the Opinions Forum, or the Beating a Dead Horse Forum. Given that the latter doesn't exist, and I move most things to the Opinions forum, I'm gonna choose door number 1.

Sammy sang some DLR tunes every tour and you hate him because you think he sucked at them. But if Sammy hadn't sung any DLR songs you'd probably be mad at him for ignoring VH's prior albums. So either way Sammy loses.

Its all about what YOU like, or YOU like, or YOU like etc.

I personally thought that when Van Halen did cover songs in the Roth era, that is what made them unique. When they did do covers in the Roth era, to me, each had a "Van Halenized" sound. It sounded fun, and that is what I like.

The band took on a different personality when Sammy joined, part of that was "no covers", or so it seemed.

The only I remember from the Hagar days:

    DONT GET FOOLED AGAIN
    APOLITICAL BLUES
    ADDICTED TO LOVE

That's a good way to lose points with Lead Synth For the record, though, I will admit Sammy sounds a bit like the Bolton One on this song. Of all the ballads Van Halen has done, it's probably my least favorite.

I'm still trying to figure out why:

expressing love = cheese = bad

Maybe someone could explain it to me, because I've always found that to be a good thing

"You'd think that people would have had enough of silly love songs
But I look around me and I see it isn't so..." - Paul McCartney

There's nothing wrong with singing about love 'n mushy stuff...for most bands. However, Van Halen was kind of the antithesis to lovey-dovey music, and some of us would prefer that they stay that way. Certain bands bring certain things to the table, and for Van Halen, love songs wasn't really one of those things - that's what made them unique to a lot of us. You want love songs, well there was Journey and Foreigner and Loverboy and later Bon Jovi for stuff like that - not dissing those bands for people that like them (and I like some of them) but when I want to listen to that I'll put on a Foreigner or Loverboy album, when I feel like listening to something with a little more attitude but in a good natured way, then I play some Van Halen (and when I want to be really pissed off I'll play some Dead Kennedys!)

Zadian - you know you started this thread just to stir up sh*t. Keep it up and you might wanna change your name to "Plunger".

What made the original Van Halen unique was that they didn't sing about emotions. They conveyed emotions through their songs. There's a distinct difference between getting the audience to emote, and asking them to ponder just what love is.

How many bands have ever conveyed a feeling as well as early VH? It was susinct, to the point, and powerful. Not every VH fan understands that (DLR draws his audience from all walks of life), but the songs were written so that anyone can enjoy them even if they don't intrinsicly understand what's happening. That's some masterful music.

When Sammy came aboard that sort of unique music went by the wayside. The emotions were discussed, rather than felt. The music and song-writing was still the best in the business, and Sammy is a great singer. They were the best at what they did, just as the original VH was the best at what they did. The difference is that there are very, very few bands that can achieve what went on up until 1985, and a whole slew of them that can do what went on after 1985.

Well %#^%$#^&** excuse me!!! You people trash other bands, not to mention the people who like them, you whine about cheese and all I did was make the point that DLR served his fair share of cheese with and without VH. Instead of trashing me why don't you put some thought into stating your own opinion on why songs such as 'Jump', 'I'll Wait', 'Dance the Night Away' etc are not cheese? Is it simply because it is DLR, or are you just so blinded by your obsession towards the guy that you can't realize his shit stinks too! Like c'mon, you can't have your cake and eat it too. And not only that even Eddie was sick of all the covers when Diver Down came along.

By the way, I find the most open, realistic, and inteligent responses/opinions generally come from the people who also liked and appreciated Sammy. The DLR obsessed need to just let it go, and further it is probably with great thanks to the DLR obsessed that VH will never be heard from again, unless it is a box set, or BOVII

    $^^$#% Grow Up!
