Not trying to start the one millionth chapter of Sam vs. Dave; because this post is about the music , which includes Alex, Eddie and Mike.
I loved both eras, in the moment. As each cassette/disc was released I simply wore them out. First song to last song, over and over and over.
Any die hard Roth fans say different about 5150,OU812, FUCK and Balance and you're lying.
When Van Halenville became a ghost town in the later 90's, my own catalog began to collect dust.
I listened occasionally, but not non-stop like I used to.
Then, summer 2002, Dave and Sam tour and I start hearing a lot more VH on the radio. I got the fever again.
Seven years after Balance was released and seven years older, I was steadily listening to VH and here's what I found.
I found myself listening to Roth VH about 80% to Sammy VH 20%.
To me, Van Halen's music with Sammy has not stood the test of time. Roth's VH has.
This isn't Sam vs. Dave, it's a music fan wanting to listen to VH and I keep pulling VH I thru 1984 off my CD rack.
Any 80% Sam VH? Majority at 50-50?
Just curious.

I'm 50-50. Some weeks I'll listen to Roth more, some weeks I'll listen to Hagar more. But I love 'em both equally, and can listen to any one of Van Halen albums over and over

I'm very 50/50. There is a complex simplicity in the first six albums (first four really) that I love to listen to when I'm in the mood for something more aggressive.

I appreciate the Hagar version of the band for it's musical diversity and growth - from aggressive (Humans Being) to simple pop songs (Love Walks In).

Two different bands - both with great music

For me, it's about 95% Roth to 5% Hagar. I'm not anti-Sammy, I just prefer the Dave-era material. I agree about it standing the test of time better than the Sammy-era material. I don't think that it's even debatable, although I'm sure that there are some that will try.

I tend listen to 70% Sammy, 20% Roth, & 10% Cherone. These are three totally different bands. I like all three eras, but I guess since I really started listening to =VH= around OU812, I naturally listened to more Sammy.

JG, you say you pull VH1 thru 1984 off the CD rack... I pull 5150 thru VH3, VH1, & 1984 off my CD rack the most. 98Rock in Baltimore seems to lean towards playing more Roth than Hagar, but I guess that's the general concensus in the world. Is there any stations people know of that play more Hagar than Roth =VH=? If so, I would like to know...

100% Roth for me. Though I owned all the Van Hagar until Unlawful, I eventually ended up giving them away. I gave them away because each time I went back to listen to them, they sounded worse that the last time.

I still remember the day I bought 5150 on LP and they had that body builder guy on the cover. I remember thinking "God, how could Van Halen put something so incredibly stupid and gay on their record?"

Then I listened to it, and in this case you could judge a book by it's cover - the lyrics and singing would appeal to the same type of person who thought that cover was cool. That wasn't me.

I was never a fan of Hagar, in fact you could say I truly hate him, but I was willing to give him a chance because I though Eddie's talent could raise him up to the next level. He recieved his full endorcement so vehemently back than...

But the lyrics were so stupid, it quickly became clear to me that Van Halen would sink down to Hagar's level, he would stay right were he was.

I kept buying the records after 5150 hoping they would reign him in, but it never happened - in fact they continued to sink lower and lower - making videos with teenage actors and such nonsense.

Too bad...

As far as radio airplay is concerned, there are two stations here in Los Angeles that regularly play Van Halen, 95.5 KLOS and Arrow 93.1. I would estimate that it's about 90%-10% in favor of the Roth-era.

the roth era seems to be holding up better at the moment because it's older. It always seems to be that stuff that's a decade old seems dated but twenty or so years on and it feels "classic". Maybe in ten years time the eighties/early nineties songwriting and production won't be so close as to be the last fashion. Lets face it, who, in the mid eighties, would ever believe that flares could look OK again? If we ride it out, Sammy's stuff will sound like classic rock too.
