this thread is for the many, many Sammy-bashers:

"I HATE SAMMY HAGAR BECAUSE..."

A. I've never forgiven him for taking David Lee Roth's place in Van Halen. And I never will.
B. He looks like a fat Oompa that time-warped out of the Wizard of Oz.
C. He lives in Hawaii and I live in a trailer.
D. He cooks with Emeril Legasse, no wonder he's fat.
E. I'm an idiot.

I'm sure that the answer will most probably be A from those bashers.

You think they would admit that?

The people that hate Hagar are just bitter because they themselves are getting fat and old.
Things just aint what they used to be!

Get over it already.
The only good thing about a 10 hour car ride, is all the VH discs, back to back!

Hate Sammy? Nnaww, I don't hate Sammy at all.

I just didn't much appreciate the fact that Van Halen started sounding more like all their imitators once he joined.

But since I vastly prefer his solo stuff pre- and post-VH, I can only hold Ol' Red partly responsible for that...

butcher,

you're making a point i've made here a hundred times:

"blaming" sambo for the musical direction of VH is grossly unfair. VH was already moving in a decidely more 'pop' direction long before sammy had anything to do with the band. 1984 is the only proof one needs.

and, since sammy's departure from VH, he clearly has held to his rock roots with strong releases like White Lie, Sally Drive, etc.

anyone who is at least half-way objective will admit that Ed should share a very large part of the glory or blame (depending on your perspective) for the music released with sammy.

I don't hate Sammy, but I don't particularly care for him, and here's why:

1) I don't blame him (or hate him) for replacing Dave, but I do blame Dave for quitting Van Halen and paving the way for it, though... That's right - I blame David Lee Roth for bringing us Van Hagar.

2) I find his voice to be, at it's best, nerve-wracking and grating. Tonally, it's a screech; it's like nails on a chalkboard. On every Van Hagar song he sang, as soon as he started singing, it ruined the song for me. I never heard anything about the combination of his vocals with Van Halen that made me say, WOW! This is cool...

Vocally, he has no more range than Dave; it's just in a higher register. Ever hear Sammy try to be low and soulful? It ain't happening - it's because he hasn't got the range, !

3) It always pained me to see Sammy try to be like Dave. Sammy was never one to talk alot of shit until he joined Van Halen. Then, there he was up there yelling crass bullshit about wanting some pussy. The guy had no tact, no class, nothing. Dave could pull it off with a bit of humor and swagger, all tongue in cheek...

4) Lyrically, he made up shit that he thought we'd all find touching, or relevant, or cool. Instead, most of it came out as contrived and fake, corny or all of the above.

5) I think Sammy cheesed out when he joined Van Halen. For those of you who think Dave sucks because he plays only Van Halen stuff, well, didn't Sammy turn his back on his own solo career when he joined Van Halen? So what if they played "One Way To Rock" and a few other "chestnuts"... he obviously saw dollar signs, and knew he was at the peak (or beyond) of his solo career. A brilliant business decision, joining Van Halen...

As a person, I think Sam Hagar is probably a cool guy, and truthfully, I might rather hang out with him than with Roth. But I'll tell you what; Sammy hagar doesn't hold a candle to David Lee Roth in Van Halen, I don't give a damn what anyone says - the music speaks for itself...

Well, see, I can't disagree with much about Rokgtar's post, either - except that I don't quite find Sammy's voice so irritating in absolute terms. In fact, long as it ain't in Van Halen, I really like it just fine. May be in that generic metal vocals pitch, but Sammy has better presence and fullness than some other squealers I could name.

I particularly appreciate that astute distinction between register and range. Why, I'd say a linker would have to embody a certain measure of charm, cleverness, and good taste to make a point like that... ( )

I agree with some of Rokgtr's post.

1. Fuckin A right. Agree

2. I like Sammys voice and he can pretty much do live what he does on album. I can't say this for Dave. Disagree

3. I don't think Sammy's attitude changed any. I agree that Dave was very toungue in cheek while I think Sam took it seriously. Does anyone remember the minor fued they had a year or two before Dave left? It took place in Kerrang Magazine. Dave said something about Sammy and Sammy challenged Dave to a boxing match. I found most of Sammy's stage banter as well as some of his "moves" hoaky to out right lame! more agree/than disagree

4. Amsterdamn's lyrics are some of the most lame and embarassing shit I have ever heard. But he also stepped up his lyric writing on a lot of the other songs. disagree/agree

5. I F'N hated Sammy Hager before he joined Van Halen. I thought his songs were mostly novelty "I got this song idea from a bumper sticker." CRAP! When I learned they got Sammy to replace Dave I had a hissy fit. I refused to listen to 5150 for almost a year. It wasn't until I heard a few songs on the radio that I would even give it a chance. I ended up liking it quite a bit. I still prefer the Dave years but the Sammy years were pretty damn good. It wasn't the same band they were before but it was a damn fine band. I thought Sammy's talent went from shit to awesome once he joined Van Halen. Strongly disagree.

I bet both of them would be a nightmare to deal with. their Ego's are just too big. But if Dave is "on" 24/7 like he is in interviews, one of us would have to die after an hour or so!
