    Ok,

Everyday I check in here and read all the stuff everyone wants to say. I am all for freedom of speech. But here is what I think.

A few of us have said in other threads that Van Halen is Van Halen as long as Ed, Al and Mike are there. And with no offense to Mike, if it's Ed and Al-it's Van Halen. Pretty simple.

But it's all this 'if it's not dave, i'm not a fan and you suck' crap that really gets me.

If you are a TRUE Van Halen fan you would want what makes the boys (Ed,Al,Mike) happy. We all know that they don't really get along with Dave, so why all you FANS want him back is beyond me.

I would go see them with Dave and love it, as long as they are happy that way. If they are happy they will make great music and more records for all us true fans.

I will remain thier fan as long as they put out music.

On the Dave side, I think his voice is shot. I saw a show of his last tour and he needs to stop pounding 'Jack' if he wants to be a singer. Very raspy....

III was a great record. That is the way VH was heading and I loved it. I wanted more of that new style of VH.

I really wish I knew what happened with Gary. Did they(management) boot him because of bad record sales. They only went gold, because that's all the TRUE fans they have. The rest are posers.

Bring Gary back, finish the record they started to make and tour the world again.

I know I am going to get flamed like crazy, but all those that agree with me are the real fans of VH and the ones that flame are the poser 'Dave' only fans.......Dave was done in '85, leave it that way. Let him play Vegas.

    I got my Nomex on,

    kujo

Just because you like James Bond doesn't mean you need to like everyone who played him.

That would be great if everyone could like all 3 versions of VH equally, but it's not possible. Nor does it mean one group of fans is more open-minded than the other.

I will root for Van Halen no matter who is singing though. And no matter who is playing for that matter.

But that doesn't mean I won't be critical of material I don't feel measures up to my expectations.

So Dave's happiness doesn't matter? I just don't understand people who put Edward, Alex and Michael against the world. Van Halen is Edward, Alex, Michael and Dave. Anything else is an imitation and if you choose to buy it and support it, that is your choice, just as you were free to go see Diana Ross & the "Supremes" this past summer. But the Van Halen band name was established by Edward, Alex, Michael AND Dave - anyone else who's come after has benefitted because of that.

It's obvious from this quote that you never seen the "original formula" in action. If you had you would be saying "Sammy who?" and "Gary who?" I liked Sammy in the band and even enjoyed the III tour in '98, but nothing compares, nothing even comes close, to the original line-up. End of class.

I don't know how anyone can say that Sam era VH is an imitation of DLR era VH since the two eras sound so different. And then the III album comes along and sounds nothing like either of the two previous eras (at least to my ears).

Hey, Dave left by his own admission. Life went on for VH without him. I like all VH, but I'm not hear to sell my theory on anyone. If DLR VH is the only VH that does it for you, cool.

When Dave left VH I don't blame Ed, Al, and Mike for not giving up. They didn't sit around and feel sorry for themselves. They got a new singer and blazed on. But, they should have changed the groups name. Because Eddie, Alex, DAVE, and Mike is Van Halen. Anything else is NOT.Peace out.

I agree with you kujo that Eddie and Alex are the most important.
I'm moving this topic to VH Opinions.

I'm sorry, but it just gets my goat when someone downplays the importance that David Lee Roth has had in this band. People who say that the only important people are Edward, Alex and Michael apparently just don't understand the early history of this band. It's not as if they were a band on the brink of superstardom and Dave stepped in and rode the wave. Shoot, he was in the band before Michael Anthony was. But you don't see me posting that Van Halen is Dave, Edward and Alex. Dave took this band with all kinds of potential and got them seen by the right people and made sure that people wanted to see them again. People get so confused because they equate the band name Van Halen with the surname Van Halen, and sure it would be kind of goofy if Alex and Edward left and it was still called Van Halen, but then there's only one Allman in the Allman Brothers and there's nobody of the name Jethro Tull in that band - Van Halen is a band name and it's Edward and Alex's last name, but it does not give them any more importance in the band than Dave than if the band had been called Mammoth or Rat Salade. I don't care if people like Hagar or Cherone better, but I do care if they don't give Dave the proper respect he deserves for there to have ever been a Van Halen (the band) for them to join. And I am a fan.

I dont get this definition of a true fan stuff, If Dave era rocks ya boat and nothing else does, cool. If the Sam era does, and noting else cool. If you dont care whos singing as long as its Al, Ed and Mike playing... cool. It's all good, and all perfectly legit, and frankly pulling some kinda 'your not a true fan because blah blah' is a bit snobbish really. Personally I think the fact anyone found their way here and can be bothered posting is proof enough for me

You can talk about Dave being the heart of van halen all you want but its nothing but a fuckin pile of shit. EDDIE IS EVERYTING TO VH, WITHOUT HIM THERE IS NOTHING. We're talking about one of the greatest guitarist of all time, van halen is his band and thats the bottom line.
There's no doubt in my mind that vh would have made it big even if Dave was never in the band. Do you think that what drew people to vh was Dave wearing assless pants and doing the shit that he does or was it Eddie fuckin owning his guitar, rewriting the rules, tapping, kicking every other guitarists ass......no question it was, is and will always be Eddie fucking Van Halen. VH1 will always be remembered for the riffs not the vocals.

first of all i consider myself a true fan. i agree, which ever era like you or dislike is your business. if you don't want to buy a VH cd because dave is not on it that is up to you. i have never been to a show and probably never will. am i less of a fan than you? here's my point i love VH's music. i am getting to the point where i could care less about them indivually(except mike). i think it is pretty shitty to not say what they are up to. i think VH fans deserve a little more than a one night stand(i couldn't resist). how many other fans would give a shit if their favorite band was going on singer no.4? they are wasting their time with this, either you can work with dave or you can't. i'm sure they know dave's antics by now. in closing ed, you have sold your soul if getting back with dave is about chart sucess.

    Rafter, you said it well.

I was not trying to define what a true fan is.
I didn't say, if you hadn't seen em live, you are less of a fan.

I have seen them all live and franlky Dave didn't do it for me like Sam and Gary.

The point was there were posts saying 'If Dave's not back, I'm gone'.......Fine, Go...
You're a Dave fan, not a VH fan.

That's all. I just think, if you love VH, you love all thier work. Not just the first 6 records......

Ed and Al are VAN HALEN. Plain and simple.
    Dave was just an actor......

Kujo, I'm not sure what you mean by saying that "Dave was just an actor". I guess in a sense I can't argue with that. Dave played a role, and he played it (IMO) better than anyone else before him or since him.

Like I said before, I love all the eras of VH, but I also agree with Billy007 when he says that you can't just discount Dave's contribution to Van Halen. No question Edward has a talent that is out of this world, but I believe that Dave helped mould that talent into something more than it would have been without Dave.

In my opinion, Dave ISN'T Van Halen, and VH did great without him. But in my eyes, nothing can take away the importance of David Lee Roth to what Van Halen was between 75-85.
