Now and then, there seems to be this argument on who sold more records with Van Halen, Dave or Sammy, including vinyl, tapes,etc... And what qualities does Dave and Sammy bring to Van Halen and why is one singer better for Van Halen then the other? Sorry Gary, you need not apply for this argument........

id say both are about same on sales.
dave era vh has sold, more volumes of cd,vinyl, 8trks,cassetes clearly.

    sammy isnt far back.
van halen with dave has sold the most.
    fact #1
im a dave fan the most.
but to say dave is reason, im not gonna say that. but it helped.
dave was king in the 80s no doubt.
and over the years the albums of early vh, still sell well.
look at 1984 that has sold. alone 2 maybe 3 times as much as any sammy cd. fact number #2.
14 million i believe it is..
im not gonna diss sammy here, even thou i favor david lee vh era.
i think sammy was perfect choice for replacement.
who else could have done it.?
    sammy has clearly sold, consistantcy.
avg about 3.5 mill copies up to 6 million.
    and that is awesome.
so go look for your self.
there are results on each album. the amount of sales.
dave has more. dave also did more albums than sammy.
    7 compared to sams 6.

the bov1 doesnt really have any merit to who, and why it was bought, i opersonally only bought it for the new dave songs,
i didnt buy it to hear the, love songs of sammy...

but all in all id say they are very close to selling volumes..

wtf was vh3 all about lol

Man, I don't respond to "figures" too well.

I stood in line to buy "3", people.

When it comes to sales, I'm not moved. Big sales are great and I hope that the new album sells goes gangbusters, but you can't, IMO, be swayed by stats.

I mean, I'm NOT buying "The Eagles Greatest Hits," or "Triller," OK?

In the end, Dave is better for the band in my opinion, notwithstanding the great job Sammy did.

Realistically, not every album will sell 6-10 million copies. Most people who use the sales number as a Dave defense point to a gradual decrease in sales as a sign that the band was being run into the ground.

But honestly, from the perspective of an aging band that is a couple decades removed from the hip new sounds... 3-3.5 million is a really great feat.

I'll admit Dave's 2 songs moved BoV1. That goes without saying. But I'll also point out the sales didn't really take a nose dive until Sammy was thrown out of the band.

It goes to show you that both singers, adjusted for their time period and hit songs, sold about as well as each other (this is just a rough estimate). Sales alone would say that, at the given time, both incarnations had about the same number of loyal or casual fans.

It seems in hindsight that Sammy fans got sick of the band's antics quicker than Dave fans did - either that or with Dave coming back all the old fans came out of the woodwork. Tough call on that one.

But ultimately sales do not a good album make, but sales alone show the first two singers were both popular commodities.

There are two charts I'd like to see, even though I don't put a whole lot of credence in record sales as far as determining who is popular (that includes within the band as well as outside the band - i.e. VH vs. Mariah Carey). The first chart I'd like to see is each Van Halen album broken down to its sales by year - i.e. how many copies of Fair Warning were sold in 1981, 1982, 1983, etc. and the other chart I'd like to see would be the total of all Van Halen records sold each year. Just as a curiosity thing.

Van Halen with Roth was groundbreaking.

Van Halen with Hagar seemed like more of a mainstream thing.

I think if you like classic Van Halen - you like it for life.

But I think there are a lot of Van Hagar fans that moved on.

I think when Sammy came into the band it brought a whole new set of fans thus creating curiosity of what VH sounded like with Dave for those who haven't heard VH with Dave. What I'm getting at is the older albums sold alot more due to "new" VH fans coming in and buying the albums and so the album sales got bigger.

I don't think it really matters. In a way you can't compare. Dave's stay with vh and the music they created was a whole different thing than with sammy. Yes it was the same band, but the music was different. If one era sold more than the other, that doesn't necesarrily meant it was better. also I agree with the post above. When sammy came on board, it brought a whole new crop of listeners that went back and bought the old catalogue, thus boosting sales to daves era
but once again, in my opinion, none of it really makes a difference. It doesn't make dave better than sam or vice versa
