Don't really care anymore. Honestly, I think this thing has been way too hyped. Yes, Van Halen with Roth was one of the greatest bands off all time ('74-'85). Definately one of the greatest live shows. But what are we expecting now? It's not going to be the same. You'll have a bunch of guys in their mid 40s (two them with hair plugs) prancing around the stage, singing old tunes they wrote in their 20s, looking to cash in on a little nostalgia. "Hey man, I'm gonna fuck your girlfriend!" Yeah man, too bad she's old enough to be your daughter. And Dave, please don't piss JD on everybody.
Great! Heck, their album might be good (& you can bet i'm going to buy it), but really, who cares. When MJ came back, everybody hyped it, including myself. In the end though, it's just an older, less explosive version, less relevent version of the old Michael. It happens to everybody, the Stones, VH, Motley Crue, MJ, etc...

You don't care about VH any longer, but you'll buy the album if they reunite with Dave?

    Sounds like you care.

If folks on this discussion board, didn't care about Van Halen, they wouldn't be lurking and/or posting here. As far as Roth being back, only a select few know the answer to that.

As far as a Roth reunion is concerned, I didn't care about it in '96 and I don't care about it now. Would I support the band if it happened? Well, yes, because it's still Van Halen. But when it comes to who sings I'm a lot less picky than some people around here.

You know, illusion is a funny thing. Obviously a large part of what floored me about 1984 the first time was the music itself. But I was 14 years old, so part of that was also my youth, my inexperience, my limited world view at the time, my openness to a larger than life sound and fury. It's not just what the music is capable of giving, it's what the listener is capable of giving too that explains how an album affects you.

That doesn't mean that VH wasn't extremely special in their run with Dave, because I believe they were. But it may not be enough to put those four individuals back into a room, and expect the same reactions and results, because even if by some miracle they haven't changed, the audience likely has. They caught lightening in a bottle once, can they do it again?

Of course, that's not necessarily a reason for them to not do it. If they feel they can create quality music, they should; it's ultimately up to history to decide where that music ranks with their previous catalogue.

But I think Hooligan is right, it isn't going to be the same. I think too many of us (I know I did a year ago) believe that putting Dave and Eddie in the same room is automatically going to produce an album that rivals Fair Warning or Van Halen 1. The more reality seeps in, the less I believe this to be true.

A round of applause for Glenn. He's finally getting what I've been saying for over a year now. Even if VH and DLR got together, it isn't 1985. It will never be the same.

Yet you expect a Van Hagar reunion would be an exception to this?

Me Wise Magic was better than ANYTHING issued erroneously under the name of "Van Halen" in the 11 years preceeeding it. And that was with Dave in admittedly less than top form. I have no worries about what the 4 of them could produce at this point. I have every confidence that Dave's next album is going to kick ass whether it features Eddie Van Halen, Bart Walsh, Steve Vai, or whomever on guitar.

FORD's comments above about DLR's new cd coming out and "kicking ass" raises a good point I've been considering.

When does something really "kick ass" and who determines that?

Did "DLR Band" (Slam Dunk, Relentless, etc) kick ass? If so, by what standards...just because I liked it? I'd guess so. Did Van Halen with Sammy Hagar "kick ass"? If I liked it, which I did, then it must have.

However, I think Glenn's and Hooligan's assessments are right on the money as far as a "reunited VH" goes. It won't be the same, but to the hardcore fans among us, whether that number has dwindled down to 43 at that point or grown to 43 million, it will then be up to each of us to determine if that (re)union REALLY does kick ass.

I don't think that we as hard core fans are necessarily the problem here. Put it this way, they play a 10 000 seat arena. Realistically there are going to be very few of us there that are hard core Van Halen fans; we are the ones who won't necessarily be stuck in the past because we're going to be interested in the growth that has taken place from 1985 (Dave being the example here) to now. But let's not fool ourselves, a bulk of the crowd ARE NOT going to be hard core fans. They aren't going to care about any kind of growth that has taken place over those 16 odd years; they'll really only be interested in the VH they equate with DLR, which is from 1984 or prior.

I do think there is a nostalgia factor with DLR that can't be avoided, but I don't think it's really the fault of the band or even Dave (though I think Dave plays into it when he seems to refuse to acknowledge his solo career to any degree). The concept of nostalgia doesn't just stem from what the band gives, it stems from the perception that the audience brings with it.

I think the hard core fans are more likely to accept the difference that will have occured from the passage of time. But I don't think all those casual fans are as likely to be so accepting; they're more likely to say 'that doesn't look or sound like the VH/DLR I remember'. And the casual fans will strongly outnumber the hard core fans at any venue.

That didn't seem to be the case at Bumbershoot. Well, at least not up in front of the stage where I was. Everyone there seemed "hardcore" to me.

But then, this is the first place outside of LA where Van HALEN was a huge success.

And obviously the most hard core fan is going to try to get the best seats up front.

How many people were at this show? I seem to recall that it was quite large, and no way was the whole audience hard core fans, because if Dave could fill these venues with hard core fans, why are his record sales so poor? If all of these festival audiences were made up of true fans of the man, he'd have a solo career that could be picked up on the radar.
