If Dave hadn't left from Van Halen in 1985, do you think that Alex would have played those electronic drums on 5150? I thought that the change in drum sound was to coincide with Sammy coming in. What do you folks think.

Raldo, good thinking. But, I think Alex changed drums regardless of who was gonna sing.Peace out.

I think Alex used the electronic drums on 5150 partly because Eddie's studio wasn't big enough to set up and record the regular kit properly. The studio was remodelled later to make more room for the drums.

Alex started using electronic drums in combination with his accoustic drums as far back as the 1982 tour...then he had even more of them on the 84 Tour and by 86 and 5150, they were "in vogue" and he used all elctronics except for his snare drum...his kicks were triggered. On the OU812 tour he had 3 kits that we rotated - accoustic and electric. By the FUCK tour he was back to all accoustic drums. Had nothing to do with who was singing. Hope that helps.

Nope, he wasn't really using electonic drums like a 100% of the time, I think it was more of a tryout thing incorporating ED's in different parts of the songs. Main example would have to be "Get Up". He could of not gotten that fast of a beat on regular I don't think.

I honestly hated the drum sound on 5150 and OU812. I know Al was tossing in some electronic beats on DD and 1984, but I hated the way 5150 came out. I guess I'm more of a traditionalist, but I prefer my drummers to be on acoustic kits. It showcases their talent a lot better.

Y'know, usually Ed doesn't sing this part of the song and when he does tonight for the first time, you'll find out why!"
