Let me put it this way... How many classical guitarists can YOU name. And even if you can, you would be in the minority. Randy Rhoads was leaning that direction, but he had already established his name as a rock guitarist first. You could argue a case for YingYang Egosteen, but he's hardly a household name (except possibly in Sweden)

While I'm hardly an expert on classical music, you gotta respect classical guitar. It's the test of the true talent. Distortion and effects, all that shit that people like Tom Scholz raise to an "art form", can't help you in the classical world. This is where someone like Eddie or Randy really commes through. Or Segovia, for that matter. Honestly, even though "Eruption" certainly got my attention,it was "Spanish Fly" that kept my attention.

    Welcome back, Van HALEN!!!!

...It's the BAND and Dave is really the cat that can front VH. He sang his ASS off and was really cool. No cheese here guys, this is filet Mignon! - Steve Lukather's comment after witnessing a Van HALEN 2007 rehearsal

re classical guitar , whilst technically its arguably superior in terms of off the cuff spontaneous creation it sucks..

most classically trained musicians cannot improvise..

look at SKY - 70's uk classically trained muso band - DULL...

yes , one of my pals was trained at the royal academy of music in london , he plays violin VERY well as well as several other instruments and he feels the same way..

the structured discipline of 'trained' musicians vs for example blues or jazz musicians , many of whom were self taught illustrates this.

by their very nature the free thinking improvisational non-structure of blues / jazz / rock elimiantes the requirements of a 'disciplined' approach to music , in fact the more undisciplined the better - exemplified by the drug induced masterworks of the late 60's - beatles , jimi hendrix et al..

    ok?

You have discussed this with "most classically trained" musicians? I'm "classically trained" and I was good at improv which probably has set back my musicianship in terms of theory...

"Off the cuff spontaneous creation" is only ONE measure of musicianship...Besides, pure spontanaeity(sp?)is rare in rock...solos and breaks are well-rehearsed if the band is any good...
