the absolute last thing i would do in regards to vh is bash, slam or minimize sammy!

for cryin' out loud i am an UP FRONT FANATIC!!!

for years i was annoyed at the term van hagar- it seemed to me to be a way for people to- subtley- slam sammy or to say that ed, al , mike, and sammy were not van halen. pissed me off it did.

but i have come to realize that many fans actually like all van halen and use terms like van hagar and vhmach3 to distinguish the eras.

then i actually heard sammy himself use the term van hagar to describe some songs he and ed did together,

so when i say: "van hagar" what i am talking about is "van halen with sammy hagar" . it is just an abbreviation.

yes, i see another thread about this so forgive me for starting this, but being a fanatic and seeing the question rise i wanted to let the vhlinks fanboys and girls know what the fanatics typically think.

No need to worry. I understand what you are saying. We are all equal here, you shouldn't have to explain yourself. Hell, I use the term too and so do a lot of other people on this list. Keep up the good typing!Peace out.

As I said before, I may have been the one who invented the term. I never meant it as a slam, but as a designation that yes they ARE a different band from Van HALEN. The fact that Sammy uses the term obviously means he isn't insulted at all by it. We all know Sammy thinks that his music is better than Dave's. And you all know I'm not about to agree with him. Even so, no slams or insults intended (except for a few jokes about some dorky lyrics or sappy ballads.)

Van HALEN is: Dave, Eddie, Mikey, Alex. Any questions?

Invented the term Van Hagar, FORD? Damn, was that before or after you slipped Al Gore the idea for the internet? People have been using that term since Sammy joined the band, and I think it comes pretty easily. I've got no problem with it myself. Just another aspect of Van Halen, that' all.

In all seriousness, the first time I said Van Hagar was the moment I heard on the radio that Sammy was hooking up with the artists formerly known as Van Halen. I'm not looking for royalty checks or anything, just telling the truth... Now if someone wanted to send me money though, I wouldn't complain

    It's in the mail, man'o.

One of the things that interests me is that when people insist on refering to the eras by Van Halen, Van Hagar, and VD or Van Cherone, they next notice the irony. When Van Halen was Van Halen, that's when Ed had the least control of the band. Might as well call it Van Roth, which certainly is a better description. By the time Gary was in the band, Ed was running the show (of the four, at least). Maybe that was the real Van Halen?

Nah, the irony is that it was DAVE who named the band "Van Halen" in the first place, and that most of the press people (and even some fans) initiially thought HIS last name was Van Halen!!

Oddly enough, Sammy had the same thing happen to him in Montrose.

If FORD invented "Van Hagar," then I'm inventing "Van Cherone."

And I will be getting the copyrights to the moniker.

Anyone else ever think it was ironic that both major bands Sammy was in were named after the last name of another band member?

    Freaky

    LOL

gee, the first time I heard Sammy was in the band I called it Van Hagar too

and then the next day some kid came up to me and said "Van Hagar"!

That name sort of invented itself

but I told the kid they were calling it 'Van Halen'

then he walked down the hall and turned back around and said .....

    "Van Hagar"!

funny you mention that, on the vh-1 special i saw they shaowed an interview clip of pre-vh sammy talking about montrose, in part his reason for leaving was that he was carrying the team and was feeling hel back (he was right) ..vh-1 joked about sammy leaving the group named after the guitarist and then later joining a group named after a guitarist.

The term Van Hagar was cemented fast. Especially when Sam and Ed played at FarmAid.

The term actually shows a lot of respect for Sammy. If he was a nobody - that nickname would have never been invented.

It seems like Roth preferred to call it New Van Halen, instead of Van Hagar. I guess maybe he didn't like the new singer getting special treatment.

By the way, the term Van Hagar also works in the favor of Roth too.

It shows that with Roth gone, Van Halen was markedly different.
