I'm a casualty of the Pleasure Dome, and I don't have much time to spend at forums anymore, but I thought I'd offer my prediction on VH after reading some posts here:
VH will sit tight until next year when they are inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Then they will release a bunch of old stuff, and maybe some new stuff. Aerosmith released a new CD and was inducted at the same time, followed with a tour. That would be huge and would get tons of publicity. So my thinking is that we will have to wait until 2003 before we get anything.

I was just checking out the HOF site, and I see that the ceremonies for both 2000 and 2001 took place in March. From what I can see, the site doesn't really explain their chronology, but VH doesn't actually become eligible until February 10th of 2003. I'm not sure it's realistic to believe that, given only a month between their eligibility and the ceremony that VH would actually get in in 2003.

Someone who has studied the HOF's history might know better, but I think it's very possible that even if they are a first ballot winner, they will actually go into the Hall in 2004.

Then they will release a bunch of old stuff, and maybe some new stuff.
If WB owns the rights to the old stuff, we could very possibly get some old music (new to us though, and that's all that matters) long before VH decides to do anything.

Welcome to the Links, I'm going to send this thread to the Opinions/Speculations forum for further discussion.

WB will start cashing in on the Van Halen vaults before Christmas 2002. I just hope they have the damn common sense to not repackage the old material we have all paid for enough already.

I think FORD's theory sounds plausible.

</font>
Glenn,

I think they are eligible in 2003. I think the selections are announced 6 months before, in the fall. (I beleive this years selections were announced in November or December 2001). And when they do the voting for 2003, they will look at any group that released it's first album in 1978, I dont think it is date specific. So, what I am trying to say is:

1. They vote ahead of time, knowing what groups are eligible. They dont wait until the specific 25th date to begin consideration.

2. And it's 25 years from 1978-2003, not the exact date in 1978 they released the album.

I could be wrong. But I am pretty sure.

I don't think they go in until 2004. Here's why:
I remember Bruce Springsteen went in on his first year of eligibility (1999) - I remember this because it was a big deal because the E Street Band wasn't included - they weren't listed on his first album - and he would have to be reinducted a year or so later, 25 years from whenever they were first listed on one of his albums for them to be included. His first album was January 5, 1973. So:

1973=1999
1974=2000
1975=2001
1976=2002*
1977=2003
1978=2004

* Talking Heads are in this group, even though their first album wasn't released until late 1977! As far as I can tell, their first single was also released in 1977 ("...Later demo sessions followed in the summer of 1976, and in November, the group signed with Sire...In December, the three-piece line-up recorded their first single, 'Love Goes To Building On Fire'/'New Feeling' - issuead (sic) early in the New Year..." - www.talking-heads.net). But Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers are also in this group, and their website claims first year of eligibility - their first album was in 1976. So I say 2004, but with the Talking Heads in now, who really knows!

The only thing wrong with that comparison is that Aerosmith has never really stopped touring and recording. At least since their reunion is 85.
