Okay, I know some VH fans hate to even THINK of the possibility....but the possibility just might be there.

This post isn't for any DLR purists who feel that Van Halen doesn't exist w/o Dave. Okay...you've made your feelings clear. I respect that (and I still love the man's work). Please don't post if you're just going to call me a blasphemer.

Way back when Sammy got the boot, I did wonder who would be the heir apparent should things not work out with Dave (which they later didn't).

I thought, "Well, they need someone with a STRONG set of pipes and it wouldn't hurt if people already knew who he was (read: rock and roll dinosaur)". After some thought, I came up with a name: Roger Daltrey.

He could hardly do worse than Cherone.

Now, if you wanna call me crazy, fine. But I'm curious to know who ya'll would pick if YOU could hire VH's new lead singer (besides Sam and Dave).

    Cheers,
    Some Lowlife Flat Head Scum

Good luck getting an answer other than Dave or the Grave. It's been tried 4-5 times in the last week or two.

I wouldn't like Daltrey as he doesn't do lyrics, he relies on others to write for him. At least that's what I've heard. And he's got his alter ego guitar god.

I think there are plenty who would do a good job, Coverdale, Bach, Sass Jordan, but they would all be retreds, and I'm not sure they would work, not after Gary.

That's really all I was asking. Thanks for the input.

Ya know as I heard Coverdale's "Slave" for the first time, I briefly had the same thought. Coverdale's got some good pipes. I could see it happening.

How about somebody who isn't the typical screamer.
Mike Patton screams, sometimes, but at least he does it with some humor.
VH needs an original...someone who can *add* something to the mix rather than belch out another rocker.

When I first heard Coverdale's name mentioned with Van Halen I cringed but the more I thought about it, the cooler the prospect became. I think David at least has bigger name recognition then Gary did but it still probably wouldn't work. The fans at this point want only Dave or Sam with the majority favoring a DLR reunion. I'll throw out Jani Lane from Warrant as another possibilty for fronting Van Halen. I've always liked Warrant and think Jani would sound good in Van Halen. How about Billy Corgan or Chris Cornell?

Has to be someone who is (nearly) a contemporary of Van Halen (or from a different mold altogether), not some singer who came along from Van Halen's influence...

    My Picks:

    Jack Blades

    Tommy Shaw

    Jack Blades AND Tommy Shaw

    David Coverdale

Right on man! I love David Coverdale, I think he would be a perfect in VH! I am also a big Jack Blades fan.

I also would be happy with either Bach or Sass Jordan in VH, i'm not fussy.

Wow....nice to know that there are a lot of you out there who don't hail from the "It's Dave or the Grave" school of thought.

I'd like to respond to some of these suggestions if I may.

I think one of the more intriguing suggestions to come along would be Faith No More weirdo Mike Patton. Now, granted he's cut from a dramatically different cloth then the rest of the VH boys, but he's got some things going for him:

    1) He's a loon!
    2) There's no doubt that a Patton-led show might piss off the local law enforcement with what COULD happen.
    3) Everything I've heard the man sing is nice and crunchy, just like Halen music.
    4) The Sammy-haters would love it because it would mean no more keyboard love ballads - ever. Can you actually picture Patton singing "When It's Love"???

Mike Patton...original thinking. Not who I'd pick, but original.

    As for the other suggestions:

Jani Lain: Well, you're guaranteed to get women tearing off their tops in the front row.

Sebastian Bach: Ditto. To the guy who said he wanted attitude back in VH, I'm sure Bach could provide it in spades. That's both good and bad. It's good in that it makes for a good show. It's bad in that you're basically looking at DLR, version 2.0. I saw Skid Row open for VH on the final show of the balance tour, and boy was that man an asshole to the audience. When he wasn't throwing full water bottles at the crowd, he was remninding us all that HIS band used to HEADLINE. Yeah, so did Culture Club.

Sass Jordan: Sorry, not to be sexist, but I can't see a woman fronting Van Halen anymore than I can see Sammy fronting the Go-Go's. She's still a babe though. Great voice.

Jack Blades: It would be hard to see him dropping the bass and picking up the mic. His voice is good (I think he'd do Sammy's ballads nicely live), but he needs to be able SHRIEK out some tunes.

Tommy Shaw: Now here is a guy who could pull off the lead singer vibe if he would only grow his hair out long again. He can hit the high notes like the best of them....AND it would be uber-cool if a VH show closed out with a medley of, say, "Drop Dead Legs/Too Much Time On My Hands" with a double guitar riff with Eddie and Tommy.

Billy Corgan: Naw....all wrong for Halen. All wrong.

Chris Cornell: Yep. I can see it. The man can WAIL!! I would LOVE to hear a VH version of "Black Hole Sun". I'm sure they would do it as much justice as they did "I Can't Drive 55".

    Cool! Who else?

    LOL.

I'm totally behind Dave. I can't see anyone else making a great record with the guys at this stage - And vice versa.

    Both parties need each other.
