I was thinking. If "Eruption", "Intruder", etc. is Van Halen in the mind of FORD and others.

Is kareoke Van Hagar - Van Halen? Or does Sammy's presence poison everything?

Just wondering. Not trying to upset either Dave or Sam fans.

I think it comes down to this. With Sammy at the helm the "edge" was gone. Musically and visually. That era of Van Halen was over. And that's fine with me. I wouldn't mind to revist that era sometime very soon, but there is a cerain amount of "cheese" involved with DLR and his antics.

No karaoke would be Gary singing Van HALEN songs on the VD III tour. I would say Gary singing Van Hagar songs too, but he was being told to sing like Sammy anyway

Not sure I explained myself very well.

If you remove the vocal tracks from Van Hagar - would that be Van Halen? Just as "Eruption" is Van Halen?

Maybe that was already clear - but every post confused me (including mine).

Eruption is a guitar solo, and therefore technically not a song in the sense that Running With The Devil or Summer Nights is a song. We all know that Eddie wrote the bulk of the music in both Van HALEN and Van Hagar, and that Dave and Sammy were the lyric writers in their respective bands. But it takes both the lyrics and the music to make the SONG. If those lost 5150 demos with Dave singing ever do materialize, don't expect the music on them to sound exactly like it does on the album. Different melodies, song structure, etc. would be part of the songwriting process. An example of this would be the bootleg song "Voodoo Queen" compared with the official song "Mean Street". Even a casual listener will notice the guitar riff is the same, but beyond that there were significant changes in the song's structure between the 77 demo tape and the 1981 issue of Fair Warning. And it was more than just the lyrics. It was Dave AND Eddie who shaped those Van HALEN songs, and it was Sam AND Eddie who shaped the Van Hagar songs.

So yes, a Van Hagar song without vocals would remain a Van Hagar song, because that was how it was written and structured, not just lyrically but musically as well.

You bring up a very good point, one that I've never heard before. There will always be this debate about three different bands vs one band with three singers.
Which is fine because there are no losers here with this debate (and that's all it is).

Heres another scenario along those lines:
Let us say that there is a bootleg that never made it to an album, or cut material from the album 5150, who is going to claim that? For all we know, Dave could be singing old stuff from 5150 that never made it but was intended for Sammy, is it going to be called Van Hagar then? He may change a few things here and there, but it's still Van Hagar or.... Van Halen?

If Dave sings Van Hagar in concert - that would be like him admitting that Van Hagar is Van Halen.

Course he sang "You Really Got Me", and that didn't make the Kinks Van Halen, or vice-versa.

But if Ted Templeman is the 5th member of Van Halen, that means that For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge had 4 members of Van Halen.

And if Pete Best replaced John Lennon - then you could still have 4 legitimate Beatles.

And if Van Halen changed its name to the Waboritas - well, that would just plain rule.

Now when Dave and Sam perform their duet at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame - that just might create Van Halen-stein's Monster.

Word of advice...never ever call out FORD on something like this unless you want to loose your argument real bad.

Dave would probably agree with you on this, and that's why it isn't gonna happen.

No, but when did any member of the Kinks ever play on a Van Halen album? That's an entirely different situation.

Again, entirely different situations. Pete Best had nothing to do with the creation of the Beatles brilliant music. And while Ted Templeman had a great deal to do with the finished product of a Van Halen album, he also was not involved in the creation of the music itself.

Uhhh no. The Waborita is a good drink, but it's a really stupid name for a band. Sorry Sammy, but it's the truth.

It would be some kind of monster! Not sure if I see a duet happenning though.

I really resent the "name" Van Hagar. There is no such band. I know you mean Halen with Sam but when you talk about Halen with Gary do you say Van Cherrone. Bad example I know no one talks about Gary. But you know what I mean.
If you met Ed and wanted to ask him about the years with Sam would you mention Van Hagar. I don't think so!
Maybe I'm being a little picky but I take my Halen seriously.

I guess FORD got through my kaleidoscope of tricks.

But Ray Danniels and I are already concocting new plans to which FORD will have no escape.
