Just to say if this happens and I'm sure it wouldn't because it seems 100% sure that Dave's back in but what if it did?? Would it be the death of our beloved band???

Does the proverbial bear shit in the woods? They get a 4th singer, the next time you'll see anyone from VH will be on late night tv, selling their grills or exercise equipment.

LOL. I don't think it would be that bad. It depends who they would get though.

According to 90% of the Van Halen listeners at this time: yes.

Truth be told, if they produced an excellent album that sold well, had lots of air time on the radio, and made people get excited about the band: no.

    It's all relative, honestly.

Gary Cherone enters band, populatiry declines

    This correlation does not prove

New lead singer = popularity declines

So it totally depends on who they got and the music they produced. That's a "what if" question with no answer.

Why of course not. Van Menudo with Ricky Martin would be a multi platinum success....

    YEAH FUCKIN RIGHT!!

what I meant to say was .....

FUCK YES it would be the death of the band! Actually the band died on Oct 2, 1996. We're just waiting for the ressurection and second coming.

(not intended as blasphemy, except for blasphemy against VD III)

I guess at the end of the day, it's more important how Eddie would answer this question. Does he think that the band could survive a fourth singer at this stage of their career. I'm guessing that Eddie realizes that at their ages, there is only a small window of time to combine the energy of the past with the wisdom and clarity of the present.

Personally, I'd buy a VH album with a fourth singer on it, but I couldn't see it being a monster at all.

If Dave isn't the singer, Van Halen will be FINISHED, look at Journey, they're a fuckin joke without Steve Perry.

I know some of you would buy ANYTHING van halen puts out..

    But I don't.

    You know why?

because if they put out albums with singers that ARE NOT DLR and people buy juuuuuuuust enough of them, the band,IMO, would think "oh well, it sells decently to keep food on the table, not selling millions like a dave album would, but then again, we don't have to put up with dave...bring on singer #6"

but if it bombs.. and i mean bombs like 30,000 sales(and i'm wondering if a 4th singer would sell THAT many) then they may start to listen to what is being said.

just suck it up like men, ALL 4 OF YA, and make the new record and go do the big tour!!!

the first time I heard VH3, it was that radio release thinggy---they played, what?, 80% of the new record???------bottom line, i laughed(and cried) and didn't buy it.

it's the same thing as enabeling an alcoholic.. if you let them drink and don't stand up and say "quit drinking" then they will drink and drink and drink and drink

I refuse to enable VH anymore!

I was amazed how bad that album did and how bad the tour did! I guess there were millions of people who felt the same way i did..

THAT's why i will NOT support any singers other than Dave.

They would die, no question. The Cherone thing is a red herring - yeah that album sucked. But the fact is that hardly anyone bought it in the first place, it's only the (majority of the) hardcore fans who know it sucked. No one else even cared when it wasn't DLR or SH.

Rock'n'roll is a tough business and the consumer is always right regardless of artistic merit. An album with singer #4 wouldn't get the airplay or publicity regardless of quality. WB ain't gonna sink the money into another EVH experiment. The only future any 25 year old band has is in looking to the past.....which doesn't mean the same thing as living in the past.

Well Jonathan, I will admit I honestly feel right now the only thing they could do to stay in the limelight is get a former singer (which they did).

I'm just saying people are fickle, and while a lot of the "hardcore" fans would say it's a joke and walk away, if it was good enough to get a break and attracted enough casual fans and made money, you know all would be forgiven at WB, since all they care about is the money.

Hell, why else would they be so hot to get Dave back... he guarantees platinum status for the next record

Stuff, that's not how the recording industry works as far as I know. WB puts the money upfront - an advance - based on expected returns. The money to pay for recording, support the tour, publicity, pay the band etc is made available *before* anything happens. This is why DLR and EVH renewed their publishing contracts presumably, that brings advances based on expected sale also.

Good or bad the Van Halen machine needs a lot of oil before anything happens. Even a band of their stature is only as good as their last album/tour in this regard....*unless* there is a compelling reason to put the money up, WB won't do it. There's no 'lets see how it goes with the radio' and then we'll give you more cash. All of these things: record, tour, radio, publicity are intimately related cash-wise.

That's true, but honestly, if the band had a strong enough conviction and felt for the 4th singer enough, they'd probably front their own money to make the album, so money in advance isn't an issue.

I'm merely raising the point that whether they would burn or not depends more on the music than the singer. Hell, they could turn into a pretty-boy band tomorrow and make a crapload. We'd all hate it, but they'd survive for a while. So it's kind of a moot point...
