Everyone talks about how much of a guitar god Ed is and all, but, how does Alex compare to other drummers?

I think Alex is a kick ass drummer, although he really hasn't changed his solos over the years much...but, neither has Ed...he has played basically the same guitar solo in concert since 1986 (316/Eruption/Cathedral.

I personally think that Alex got better and better as VH rolled on. I felt he was a better drummer w/ Sammy and Gary than he was in the Dave era. Just compare the solos off of RHRN or the Balance tour with the US Festival. He definitely decided to hone his rudiments, and it shows bigtime, neck brace or not. And if he really did do the whole "Hot For Teacher" intro in one take, as he claims, that's just fucking amazing. He seems to have gotten better as he got sober as well. But he is grossly underrated, and it's really a shame. I put him right up there with Bonham, Peart, whoever.

Alex is my favorite drummer. He has the best style imo.

I love his playing on songs like Hot For Teacher, Pleasure Dome, Feels So Good and Mine All Mine.

This topic belongs in VH Opinions, i'm moving it there now.

Alex has had his moments of glory as a drummer, but in a band like VH where the guitar is so important and given such a strong lead is makes it tough to get noticed. The VH rythm section of Al and Mike have always had to stick to the game plan especialy in concert because they were never sure where Eddie might go. As stated in an interview years ago, Eddie said that he always has to find his way back and when he gets there Al and Mike need to keep the ship moving in the same direction.
Al knows his role and has done a good job for years.

Alex would be 100% better if he would lay off the cymbals a little so we could hear the Toms better.

Alex's playing was excellent, I felt in 1984 and in FUCK. His drum work in those records was amazing!

Just admiring his work on Fair Warning today.

He adds alot to the VH flavor.

Let's not even go down the comarison road as it is virtually impossible to rank musicians in a non-biased way.

There is no benchmark test for musicians, it all about soul, communication and delivery.

I love the little things he does. The things you have to listen real close to hear. Humans Being comes to mind.

I also love the drums on Get Up.
I'll Wait has a really good sound too.

And of course Hot for Teacher rules!
Better use it up before it gets old!

Well Andy Johns was brought in to make the drums sound better than on earlier albums. Alex was not trying to sound like John Bonham...that's an understatement, he was only trying to improve his sound in the studio. And to answer an earlier question imo Alex cymbal sound is his trademark...You know how many drummers want their cymbals to sound like him, including myself thousands if not more.
Overall Alex as a drummer is a BadAssMotherfucker!
