February 2003 marks the 25th anniversary of the release of Van Halen's self-titled debut alum.

It's my sincere hope that the lack of activity in the Van Halen camp of late, is because they're deliberately holding off, so as not to spoil the celebrations come anniversary time.

Whether it be in form of the announcement of a new project, the release of some archival stuff that has not yet seen the light of day or whatever...

I reckon that if we don't hear anything in the first quarter of 2003, we can take that as a very bad sign for all things Van Halen.

Anniversaries are an excellent opportunity to cash in/commemorate without actually having to do any work - which VH seem to have become very good at over the last 4 years.

Sony did a major overhaul of Michael Jackson's catalogue and re-released it with deluxe packaging and bonus tracks to mark his 30th anniversary as a solo performer.

The Violent Femmes' label re-released their self-titled debut with deluxe packaging and a bonus disc of old live recordings 20 years on.

No doubt Eddie has hundreds or unreleased recordings of all types locked away in 5150.

I'm sure that even if he's not physically well enough to pour his heart and soul into making new music or touring that he could go back through his archives, dig out 70 minutes of the best suited stuff, compile it on one disc for release and get himself an executive producer credit to boot!

Sounds like an ideal way to either finish or rejuvenate a long and successful career.

Either way, if nothing transpires early next year, then I fear VH may be over.

I think a box set of some kind is our best (only?) hope for VH music next year.

It's really just the way we sing it
