In an attempt to spark some conversation in here, I pose this question:

What was the greatest, most astounding, or most awe-inspiring moment in your experiences with Van Halen?

For me I'd probably have to say that wonder of discovering the band for the first time when I had nine albums of "new" material to go through.

But I'd guess when I finally get to a concert it just might be dethroned

That sounds about right for me too. I'd heard them on the radio for years, but ignored them cause I hated disco and I thought there's no way that guy's doing that stuff by hand, it's a synthesizer. I'd heard eruption and said big deal, it's a friggin synthesized keyboard. Shows how bright I was at the time.
I heard a tune on the radio one day, and when the dj said that was Van halen, I was so floored by the sound of Ed's guitar tone that was it for me, and I started finding out what I could about them . When I was able to pick my jaw up off the floor I started ripping guitars apart to find that sound and I've been hooked ever since. Seeing them in concert for the first time kept me on the edge of my seat the entire time.

For me it was probably hearing Humans Being on the radio for the first time. I had been a Van Halen fan for about a year before it came out, so it was the first new song I heard. I remember listening to the radio everyday, waiting for it to come on. Then when it was on I taped it on a cassette and listened to it over and over.

You know Dan, I think that would be mine as well. A buddy and I were cruising down a highway next to the beach, just looking at the beginnings of bikini season. We're both VH nuts, but neither of us knew a thing about Humans Being. It came on the radio, and we both said "oh my god, that sounds like Eddie!" What a kick in the pants! You know, the HB comment reminds me back before VH3 came out. Driving around as a senior in high school with the lame-ass AOR station on hoping to catch a listen of Without You. And, of course, it was quite a trip when I actually DID.
