why is it that those last two songs VH did with roth (me wise magic & can't get this stuff no more) aren't talked about more?? they were great tunes and really left me with the impression that Roth did, in fact, still HAVE IT... his voice was fine and there really was that 'ol VH flavor to the tunes.

i am the only person who thinks that or what???

They were interesting songs... but IMO at best they were 'B' side material.

Neither of em were "hits" nor of the caliber of any of the top songs from 78-84. Roth's voice was weak and strained. He's actually doing better singing today than back then.

IMO the lyrics and whole vibe missed the Van Halen happy pants magic that people place on a pedistal and worship round here.

It showed they could put out a song or two but didn't hit the high mark everyone expected... which is why they don't get airplay nor generate much discussion. Lackluster is the word that best describes.

For the record... I'm not making any comparison to the other singers for VH in this statement just my opinion of the DLR collaboration.

Your milage may vary...

I agree with Zahzoo...very interesting work but not high caliber, mainly due to DLR's vocals.

The first time I heard MWM I thought it was DLR trying to sound like Sammy, which he clearly can not pull off. None the less, good tunes but not in the same league as classic VH.

I'm sorry but I completely disagree. I was so surprised when I first heard MWM. It has now become one of my all time favorite songs. When I first heard it on the radio I felt that same old feeling that Van Halen was back. CGTSNM is ok, but as Paul McCartney said when critics ripped The White Album:"Hey shutup. It's the bloody Beatles." I say regarding those two songs:
Hey shutup it's The Mighty Van Halen!

They were very good songs but not "hits". They were good in a "Fair Warning" type of way - they were definitely not pop songs but they made the fans very happy.

I also thought at first that Dave was trying to sing a left over Sammy era tune with MWM. It took me a few listens before I appreciated Dave's singing. I thought CGTSNM sounded like something from "Diver Down" -- it was pure Dave. I was stunned to find out that it was a left over tune from the Sammy era.

And speaking of Sammy, "Humans Being" is also a great song. 1996 was a great year musically for Van Halen. Too bad they couldn't avoid having food fights with both singers.

hey - walter payton - my childhood idol!!!! what a great guy he was. huge bears fan here. shame how he passed on; my mom suffers from the same decease he died from......

anyway, it took me a couple of times to really get into those song, but i'm telling you - it's easy to get the ol VH feeling back when you listen to them. roth always had a 'sassy' quality. kinda made you want to 1)screw a hot chick, 2)get into a bar fight, 3)do a couple of lines, and 4)throw an egg at a cop car. just got the blood pressure and spirit goin. sammy, didn't delivered that feeling (although his voice is as good as it gets for a rock singer).

"babe with the fabulous shadow" - what a great lyric.......

MWM & Humans Being are great songs, both in my "all time favorite VH top 10".

CGTSNM isn't that good IMO. It looks to me as if it was put on the album to have 17 tracks on it.
Why didn't they put 'Between Us' on instead of CGTSNM?

PEACE!

MWM sounds very much like a song that was written with Sammy in mind - in fact it wouldn't surprise me if Sammy wrote the melody to that song. CGTSNM is a bad song - plain and simple. I put it on the level of Little Dreamer. MWM is great, but you can her Roth's remaining vocal chord stretched to the max. But, as EVH said, he was a trooper and the song is cool.

The guitar playing on 'MWM' is unbelievable. Unfortunately, Dave 'speaks' most of the lyrics. That would rub a lot of people the wrong way. The background vocals of Mike sound amazing. I personally liked the two songs. If they redid the songs today, it would sound so much better because Dave's voice is in better shape.

Me wise magic and can’t get this stuff no more was a true VH collaboration. To say that Dave's voice was not cutting it is totally wrong.

Eddie Van Halen, Glenn Ballard and Desmond child wrote those two songs that Dave recorded for the greatest hits package.

From what Eddie said on an interview for Rockline, Ed said that he had worked up about 5 songs with Glenn Ballard and Desmond Child and had Dave listen to it. Dave liked Can't get this stuff no more, and was not too cool with Me wise magic because Dave felt it was dark and that was not his personality. Finally Me wise magic grew on Dave and he co wrote it with Eddie and Desmond Child.

Eddie in the interview said that he loved me wise magic and that the first verse he was responsible for. "I know what you're thinking".

Said that it gave it a kind of spooky vibe.

It was not a Van Halen song to begin with.

Had it been Eddie, Alex, Mike and Dave that would have written the two songs for the greatest hits album, we would have had a more powerful performance.
What is understood, need not be discussed.

Is that why Sammy got a 60K cheque for these songs?

I never understood why Dave was trying to sing so high in those songs, especially MWM. The chorus sounds like someone kicked him in the nuts.

He didn't sing like that before and the songs were great. I guess he was trying to show Eddie that he could sing high, too. Didn't even sound like him when he did it. The verses were pure Dave, though.
I asked a ref if he could give me a technical foul for thinking bad things about him. He said, of course not. I said, well, I think you stink. And he gave me a technical. You can't trust em. -

Someone said a while back that when 5150 was in production, the producer suggested Eddie "turn" Dreams up a step in register. Sammy pulled it off and sounded good on it, and Eddie started writing all his stuff in a higher register.

This would seem to hold true since we have Dave in '96 being forced to sing high in a song and Gary in '98 singing way to high in all the songs on that album.
