" If music is a refelction of the times, then Van Halen reflected everything that was great about the 80's - great sex, great parties, no worries, good friends. Like the 80's, Van Halen walked the walk and talked the talk. Van Halen's loud and snotty guitar was complimented by the bravado and gin-soaked scream of front man Roth. Roth had an uncanny ability to put Van Halen's good time music to words. Roth's lyrics reflected the "behind-the-bar" talk that has become a fine ritual for boys becoming men ( and maybe back to boys ). With Roth, Van Halen was easy-go-lucky, confident, and over all, fun. With the dismissal of Roth and the arrival of Hagar, however, Van Halen lost it's lyrical edge and with it, a sound that changed rock forever. Rather than writing the complicated and spell-binding riffs that are woven into ' Fair Warning ', Van Halen had resorted to fluff rock ( I like to call it "Van Halen-Lite" ). Sure, Hagar has a greater range than Roth, but who cares? Eddie Vedder can go more than an octave and yet he has proved that it is not the castrated scream that receives praise but the lyrics and the passion behind them. Is is sad that Van Halen has forgotten about the music of six great albums. Because of Van Halen's inability to bury the hatchet, we're all suffering. Please deliver Mr. Hagar back to the 70% off bin where the rest of his solo work rests silently."

Little known tidbit: BOV1 was supposed to be a double-disc set but Hagar was afraid that the Roth era would sell more.

    No doubt!

Hey, Sam is a great guy. He holds no ill fellings towards this guy, so I think he is softening up on Eddie & Alex too.

'Old Van Halen, when I was in it-classic Van Halen-makes you wanna drink, dance and screw, right? And the new Van Halen encourages you to drink milk, drive a Nissan and have a relationship.' - David Lee Roth.
